I had this problem, but i got a friend to leave me a pointless answer message, and when I deleted that, the symbol promptly disappeared. Hope this helps.

problem is with proximity sensor calibration, you have to recalibrate it 1. go to service menu - 1809*#900# 2. in that menu clink on OTHERS 3. there click on PROXIMITY 4. click CALIBRATE and OK and it should be work properly
The solution is a bit convoluted and tedious, but it works.
SMS format messages can't be e-mailed. Therefore, they need to be converted to Multi-Media format by inserting an image, sound file, video file, but not a symbol, after which they can be e-mailed.
However, original SMS transmission details including recipient/source, date and time do not appear to be preserved when the SMS is first prepared for forwarding and attaching a MM file, prior to sending as an e-mail. Therefore, either a manual record of the original SMS details can be kept, or the forwarding SMS edited with those details and the MM file insert, prior to e-mailing.
I had the same problem with my phone - ring it from another phone and leave yourself a message, then dial the voicemail, listen to the message, delete it and that clears it. It worked for me.
thank you it was driving me mad
