    Thanks a lot guys!
RobLW, apparently it is detecting fine, and I should hope it should since it is a DELL monitor attached to a DELL notebook...although perhaps that does not count for much these days.

I had this problem occur once in the past with the same machine at an international conference & same thing happened with a projector....system promptly crashed a few minutes later. End result was a complete wipe of hard drive and total fresh reinstall of all software. A year on and I have the problem again.

But get this....I rebooted defragged the hard drive and now it is all fine again! However, I suspect that PauldLucky is on to something. I am gonna check out the Intellitype advice and try and end this ****** for good!

Thanks for all your help! I could find nothing online regarding this problem so I really appreciate your fast help! Cheers!

When you turn on the external monitor after attaching it to the notebook, is Windows automatically detecting and installing the device correctly?

Hi , my dell inspiron 6400 vista has no disply but external monitor it shows fine ?

Hello,

If the external monitor is fine then there might be the issue with the display panel cable ( cable which connects mainboard with display) or the display itself. Ypou will have to replace.

Thanks

Monitor does not work, computer starts up, dell prompts load, windows prompts load then screen goes black. i can hear everything loading but no display.

connect an external monitor on your machine and check if display is ok on the external monitor. if yes, try to re-install your video driver and check if display is ok on your laptop.

if both doesnt have display (external monitor and laptop's display) i suspected your lcd display is faulty.

Laptop problem

Reseat the video cable connection under the keyboard, and see if the lines go away. If not, connect an external monitor, see if the lines show there. If the lines do not appear on the external monitor, then replace the LCD. If they do appear on the external monitor, replace the motherboard

DELL inspiron 6400 laptop screen turned black

this sounds like a classic case of inverter problems, it could be just inverter coil thats gone which is an inexpensive repair, if it is the inverter then its a bit more.
try the Fn the F key that shows two tv screen icons, it may just have switched to external mode by accident

good luck

You can refer to this document for display assembly. It looks like the display is going bad. By checking the seating of the display cable, you're isolating the fact that the cable is connected.
