Question about Sony Handycam DCR-DVD108 DVD Camcorder

1 Answer

Touch panel won't function.

My touch panel won't activate when I touch it, at all. The display is perfectly fine, but when I try to touch one of the options nothing happens at all, and I can't configure as it says you should do in the manual because to do so I have to touch the screen.

Please if anyone can help me I would greatly apreciate it!

How would I reinstall the firmware?

  • Scubastisti May 11, 2008

I bought the camera as new off ebay a while back, and since I had it, it has had this problem, so I have been unable to install any programs on the computer. I can't send it back to the seller as the seller has already told me that because I have already bought it I can't send it back to the US, and because I am in Australia they can't fix it here as it has a US only waranty and they charge $88AUD just to give a quote. I know it was a long shot, but I was hoping someone would have an idea of how to fix it as I am desperately needing it fixed, but the price they are charging for a quote is rediculous, imagine what they would charge to fix the problem ontop of that!

Yeah, I've tried to calibrate many times, but still to no avail. The buttons on the side of the panel such as the home button etc all function, it is just the ones on the screen I cannot access and without them the calibration procedure is useless.

You may try reinstalling the firmware and configuring afterward. If this does not work the touch panel may be defective.
I will see if I find a download and further info.

To reinstall firmware you need to have the image file , sometimes this is available for download, depends if Sony does distribute it. You update it using computer connection and software, but first we must be sure it is not a different problem.

First reset the camera by removing disk and battery for a couple of minutes, and see if the touchscreen works, did touchscreen even worked?

If it is just a matter of settings you could use the remote to adjust settings, but I am afraid you cannot fix this with settings adjustment.

Check first if you have a C or E message at the upper righthand corner of display. If you have an error message it may be an hardware fault, in this case post error code.

    Here is manual for refence

Sony does not distribute firmware, they will tell you to go to an authorized repair service.

I enquired Sony on this problem here is their answer:

"If the buttons on the touch-panel LCD
screen do not respond correctly or do not work at all, adjust the LCD
screen calibration. Consult the instruction manual if specific
information is required to perform this procedure; instruction manuals
are available online in the Manuals/Specs/Warranty section of the Sony® eSupport Web site.

NOTE: The touch-panel LCD screen cannot be calibrated if it is rotated.

If the issue is still unresolved after
calibrating the touch-panel LCD screen, service may be required. The
Sony® eService Web site at can assist you in obtaining service from a Sony Service Center or locating a Sony Authorized Servicer."

The problem may be beyond repair with a small amount or a rather silly problem.
If it is just a matter of calibration I need to find out calibration procedure, as the touch display had just been "moved" and is out of place. If it is faulty instead, then you have been scammed and you need a repair shop, let see what I find.

Check also if the home button below display is working, if not even buttons are working then is an internal problem, probably with ribbon cable connecting display and commands.

Go to page 105 of manual and do calibration procedure, this can fix the problem, if it does not work, then camera is defective.
Here is manual again, go page 105 and do calibration.

When I flip out the LCD Display on my DCR DVD403 the screen just stays white. But if i touch where the touch buttons are they work, i just can't see anything.

The touch screen portion of your lcd panel is working correctly but the panel isnt. The panel needs to be replaced and 9 times out of ten the cable does as well. I hope this helps.

The touch screen is not working. After resetting

If the buttons on the touch-panel LCD screen do not respond correctly or do not work at all, adjust the LCD screen calibration. Consult the instruction manual if specific information is required to perform this procedure.
NOTE: The touch-panel LCD screen cannot be calibrated if it is rotated.

Weird.. same with mine! Seems perfectly fine with exception to this problem. No obvious damage, camera still functions as expected, but yes, not responsive to touch. Could it be a date issues (2008.. lead year ?).

Sony TRV-19 Camcorder - Black screen in camera mode

Fixed it, at least temporarily I had the side off my trv250 examining it, especially the CCD connection. I had read the post about soldering a capacitor to pins 1 and 3 (from the left) on the bottom row. I didn't have the specific capacitor on hand, but I started touching some of the small ones I did have to those pins. I found that after I touched a 100uF, 10V cap to pins 1 and 3 the picture suddenly came back to life and stayed that way after removing the cap. I have no idea how long this will last, and I've set up the cam on a tripod in the livingroom with the LCD display facing me so I can monitor it. If you, like me, figure you have nothing else to lose, you might want to give this a try. Note: my camera was suffering from the green smeary horizontal lines problem, and wasn't completely black. I'm not sure if this makes a difference or not.
