If the contacts are clean, and the batteries good, then it can still be other factors not allowing the camera to come on. Read the following blog- it has some suggestions of things to try:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/11/simple-fix-for-dead-cameras-that-wont.html
Here's a blog you should also check out, an interesting situation with the batteries:
http://www.fmount.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-3622.html
And another spoke of a switch inside the battery lid:
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/readflat.asp?forum=1020&message=10613819&changemode=1
Another person cleaned his battery terminals inside the camera and got it working again. Even if they look clean, they can still be slightly oxidized.
Not many other reports on the net about this problem, and most are related to the battery issues. In case you can't get it working, run it by a good camera repair shop and see if they can spot what's going on, and give you an estimate for repair.
Good luck, thanks for using FixYa, and hope this helps.

I have a Fujifilm Fine pix S2900 which will not switch on correctly. It comes on and 5 seconds later switches off. I have replaced the batteries.

Often the battery contacts can get dirty. My Kodak does the same thing. When the camera tests the battery for power, the poor contacts make the camera think the battery is nearly empty so it shuts down. Give the contacts a good clean with alcohol and check they are correctly aligned. Clean the batteries too.

My batteries seem to need replaced quite often. Should I use a special brand

Check contacts of the batteries and in the battery compartment of your camera. Dirty or oxidised contacts can be cleaned with a dry cloth. Never use sharp tools to clean contacts or anything in or on your camera.
Always charge the batteries before using it for the first time, or if you have not used it for a long period. 3 months is a very long period.

Also check if the battery door is closed correct. Most cameras do have a switch connected to the battery door. If the switch does not work correct, it could be you can't switch on your camera.
Do not use alkaline batteries unless it is absolutely necessary. In most cases, alkaline batteries have a shorter service life than NiMH. Alkaline battery performance is limited, especially at low temperatures. The use of NiMH batteries is recommended.
Never use manganese (Zinc-Carbon) batteries in your camera. They can't deliver enough power.

When, while shutting down, the lens got stuck, the camera won't see it on the correct place when switched on.
When you are sure you have good and charged batteries with clean contacts, reinsert the batteries and switch on again.
If that does not solve the problem, switch the camera off and feel if al slight pressure on the lens barrel, will help the lens go in. Never use force, because you can damage the lens motor or the gears.

If you have a multi meter, you can check your battery. After charging the voltage should be higher (few tenths of a volt) than the voltage printed on the battery.
If the voltage is slightly lower, you know there will be not enough left when the battery needs to deliver some power.

Stan,

If not the batteries, then you have to look close into the battery holder. All contacts should be clean and shiny. Eventual you can clean contacts with a dry cloth. Never use a sharp tool.
But still.

Can't turn Kodak Z885 camera back on

Remove the batteries and clean the battery contacts inside the camera with a soft cloth (a heavy buildup on the contacts may require cleaning with a fine wire brush, steel wool, or sandpaper). Remove any residue that the cleaning leaves in the camera, and then reinstall the batteries. This clears most power-on problems, but if yours persists, check the Kodak troubleshooting guide at:
