It may have unstable DC voltages due to bad DC filter caps, that will be the first thing to look for.
If you are going to DIY and have proper tools and know safety precaution then please read on:
Most common failures in the LCD monitors are bad capacitors (bulging top/seal or leaking) in the power supply (they should be replaced in a set), blown fuses; poor solder joints, failed inverter circuits (blown fuse, shorted transistors, shorted/open transformers), bad lamps (poor solder connections or worn out lamps). You will need to open it up and inspect the inside, see example of failed SAMSUNG monitors to get some ideas what to look for: http://s807.photobucket.com/home/budm/allalbums
Post back what you see inside so we can guide you further and it will help out other people in the future also.

How to switch from analog to digital mode

Any contemporary monitor is able to switch analog/digital mode automatically if connection from signal source to monitor is set up properly.

Connect digital output from your graphic card to DVI input of the monitor. Disconnect any other signal cables from monitor and switch on both devices (PC & monitor). Wait a while. Monitor checks its inputs and a activates digital DVI, because it is only one active input on it.

If none picture excluding error message of monitor is displayed, go through these steps:
1) Check whether your monitor is set for automatic input selection. If monitor buttons have no response try to use analog input to activate screen (any picture, desktop background...) and then get monitor menu access by pressing menu button.

2) Find out what connector type has your graphics card in PC. Possibilities are: DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort and some their options. See Wikipedia for connector look if you are not sure.
Remember that blue D-SUB (VGA) connectors are analogue and you cannot activate digital mode through analog VGA cable.

3) Use appropriate cable to connect monitor to PC.
Example: Your PC has HDMI output. Use HDMi-to-DVI cable. Your monitor input is DVI and common DVI-DVI cable is not suitable in case you have PC with the HDMI.
Note that DVI-to-DVI, DisplayPort-to-DVI etc. cables are available. You must buy right one.

Be aware that "Auto" button is inactive in digital mode of monitor.

How can i use dvi port

DVI stands for (D)igital (V)ideo (I)nterface.

DVI is a new form of video interface technology made to maximize the quality of flat panel LCD monitors and high-end video graphics cards. It is a replacement for the P&D Plug & Display standard.

you can connect high definition monitor , LCD projector , LCD T.V to a DVI port

There three kind of DVI connector
1. DVI-D (Digital)
2. DVI-A (Analog)
3. DVI-I (Integrated Digital/Analog)

DVI-D format is used for direct digital connections between source video (namely, video cards) and digital LCD (or rare CRD) monitors

DVI-A - High-Res Analog
DVI-A format is used to carry a DVI signal to an analog display, such as a CRD monitor or and HDTV

DVI-I - The Best of Both Worlds
DVI-I format is an integrated cable which is capable of transmitting either a digital-to-digital signal or an analog-to-analog signal, but it will not work transmitting a digital-to-analog or analog-to-digital signal.

How to Recognize These three types of DVI Cable
There are two variables in every DVI connector cable, and each represents one characteristic.

The flat pin on one side denotes whether the cable is digital or analog:
A flat pin with four surrounding pins is either DVI-I or DVI-A
A flat pin alone denotes DVI-D

The pinsets vary depending on whether or not the cable is single- or dual-link:
A solid 27-pin set (rows of 8) for a dual- link cable
Two separated 9-pin sets (rows of 6) for a single-link cable

I have an Avocent Switchview SC4 DVI hooked up to an HP monitor and an HP computer with a NVidia 9500GT dual DVI card in it. If you hook the monitor directly to the computer it works. However, I can't get...

Is your switch a SCxPDV or a SC4UAD? Regardless, if it's a DVI switch, you can try place a DVI-D cable in between your HP PC and the switch. Do the same between the switch and the HP monitor. I'm guessing you are currently using a DVI-I cable between the PC and the switch. Some video card/OS combo send out analog signal when you use a DVI-I cable on the PC, which would not be displayed if you are using the digital port on the monitor. To read up on the difference between DVI-I and DVI-D cables, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_Visual_Interface

For future Avocent product related questions, I suggest you post them at Avocent's user forum http://community.avocent.com as it's monitored by their tech support team.

Hope this helps. Thanks.

LCD Monitors having multiple inputs have option and option to select and switch between the displays from analog (VGA) or Digital (DVI) inputs. Go to the LCD menu and select input source (DVI)

Hope this helps!

VGA connection works, DVI does not

Everything seems perfectly normal...

When you connect the computer to the monitor via an analog VGA cable, you get signal on the analog input.
When you connect them via a DVI cable, you feed the monitor's DIGITAL input, so the monitor doesn't get any signal on it's analog input, and informs you about it.
You have to select the digital input from the monitor's On Screen Menu, and then start the computer up - you should see the picture OK.
Also remember to set the display resolution on your computer to match the optimum (native) resolution of your monitor - this will give you optimum picture quality. In case of VA712B it will be 1280x1024.
Good luck and please come back with a testimonial if helped.

I need help setting up the DVI input.

Hi,

There are two ways to do this.

First and simplest is to simply shutdown the pc, disconnect the analog from the back of your PC and connect the DVI cable to the PC and monitor. When you turn it back on the PC will detect and switch to the DVI.

Second, and better to compare. Connect both sets of cables and go into your display settings, then select advanced options. You should see a GeForce tab in the advanced menu. On that tab there is a multi monitor display setup. Set it to mirror to both screens and apply.

Once it's set switching inputs on the monitor SHOULD work. The problem that makes it a "should" is that both the monitor and the video card have the ablility to sense a connection. So, even with mirroring setup you may have to use the first method as you can't have both connected and operational at the same time.

Give these a try, if you're not sure how to get into the display settings, comment back here with your windows version and I will give you a step by step

Inoperative monitor

Here are a couple things to try.

1. try the input select button on the monitor (The minnus button) without pressing the OSD menu button 1st, see if it changes to analog.

http://support.us.dell.com/support/edocs/monitors/1703fps/en/controls.htm

When the DVI self-test screen is up, it is indicating monitor is in DVI mode.

2. If that doesn't work, try a DVI to analog converter on the DVI port on the monitor and connect the analog cable to the converter. See if you get any video that way.

3. If you can access the On-Screen Display (OSD Menu) perform a factory reset.

Switch from Analog to Digital

To move to Digital (you need to have a DVI cable for this)

I'm using the monitor now and typing these instructions Mine is a HW191D Silver:

Button Layout:

(1) Menu
(2) Auto Adjust (does nothing when in digital mode)
(3) Move up in menus
(4) Move down in menus
(5) Power

Press the Top (1) button to display the OSD Main Menu

The Press the button Next to the Bottom (4) twice (Input Setting should be highlighted)

Press the Top button (1) once to allow you to select between Analog and Digital (use the button next to the bottom (4) to select between the two)

Press the Top button (1) and it will change to the input that you selected.

If you selected Digital and you don't have a DVI cable connected, the display will go black and then return to Analog (VGA)

(1)(4)(4)(1)(4)(1)

I hope that helps

No digital signal but analog works fine

Seems like this was already answered? But once you've checked against the owner's manual and ruled out the PC, I would suspect the signal / video board inside the monitor. May have gotten a surge or static, etc.
