Try this: disconnect the player from the computer, turn it off, hold in the volume + button, and reconnect the player to the computer while holding the volume + button in. Keep holding the volume + button for an additional 5-50 seconds. Windows should eventually go into recovery mode and revive the player- it will pop up a window that says Found New Hardware Wizard.
k i think i figured it out, plug your zune into your comp or lap top and just let it sit, after a little bit(for me it was like 5 to 10 min) look at and see if the zune is on, it might just be like a black screen so it doesnt look like its on but it is. now just do the reset by holding the back button and up on the pad. hold it till you see the backlight turn off. then now just hold the play button to turn on and it should work.
Listen, i don't know if you've found the solution to this yet but the exact same thing happened to my 80 gig zune. All i did was let the battery completely drain. I left it without charging for about 5 and a half hours. Then, while having it plugged in, i held the back button and down button at the same time and it was back up. Hope this helps.
The simple reset did not work in this situation. However, the disconnect and reconnect while holding the volume button worked the first time. Thank you for posting. I was getting worried my Zune was gone. Thanks to ThaMp3Doctor.
Try the lock switch...
My 8GB wouldn't turn on either. I went to lunch, came back and the thing wouldn't even give a tiny sign of life when I plugged it in to charge it. Then I flicked on the lock button and voila - the little bugger turned back on. Still, for $150 - it's frustrating to worry that it's going to be a Russian roulette game everytime you want to listen to your music. (I am deeply regretting giving away my cheapie $25 MP3 player right after I got this one for Christmas...)
Hello, I was about to throw my zune to the trash but I thought, what the hell let's open this.So I looked up for a video in youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pJwLn75RQRM, this guy teaches you how to change your zune hard drive, it's preaty cool. So I opened my device and first I disconeccted and connected both cables (Battery and the other one I don't know what it is...), started up my device and walahh!! it worked.I hope it works for you!
My 30 gb Zune (model 1089) worked fine plugged into the wall, but would not turn on if not connected, and just continuously turned "on and off" when connected to computer (the PC doesn't recognize it even after manually launching the zune software interface). When turned on it shows the main zune display and a power-up strip then turns off. Now after trying to sync to my computer it will not even power up. For the record. It was a battery problem. New battery cost me <$8 off ebay..... it came with 2 plastic devices to assist opening the case....although an exacto knife (hobby knife) would have worked as well. There are vids on youtube that demonstrate how to open. It took less than 5 minutes to open change the battery, close and replace the 2 screws.
if you have a warranty on it just send it back to Zune, you can go to your nearest wal mart, ask them for help and see if they can send it back for you.
Try the Zune on a different PC. If that also fails, there is an issue with your motherboard (could be your dock connector or an electronic problem). There are third party Zune repair services, that will fix it for cheap. Even better, I found an DYI Zune repair guide,so you can do it yourself too, not that difficult. Part is available onEbay. If you can't do it yourself, have a tech savy friend do it for you.
My Zune had this problem. I tried all the solutions above without result. I finally noticed that where the cable that goes to the computer connects one of the little wires was bent over and was not connecting. I carefully used a fine screwdriver and bent it back to its original position and it started working again without any problems.
u can "reset" the zune using while holding the back key and the up key on the control pad. it worked for me
=D

my 4g zune doesnt do anything its dead
My 80GB Zune is like totally dead, last time this happened I charged it for 2 days straight, and it worked. I did the same this time, and it still didn't work. what am I suppose to do? HELP!
Push the home button, power button and the side control button - your device will "power up" - it will advise you to connect to your PC and completely upload/update the software...
Don't know WHY it did this. Seems fine now. Craziness....
My 4GB Zune was completely dead. It wouldn't turn on or charge and it wasn't locked. None of the reset solutions worked. I even tried different chargers. It seemed like a hardware problem so my first thought was the battery. I was going to open it up but first I tried holding the Zune in one hand and, with the charger connected to the Zune, I jiggled the charger connector left and right a couple of times with my other hand. A second or two later it came back to life and started to charge.
I think I reseated the battery to its connector or closed a broken connection but it seemed to boiled down to a battery problem. If this doesn't work you might want to open it up and try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery or just get a replacement battery like some others have suggested.

I have had A zune before the charger that comes with it only works for a few charges you will have to get a differant chager for it, it worked for me

ok what you might try doing is what i tried and for some odd reason if you turn on a Nintendo Wii or PlayStation 2 or 3 or even a Xbox 360 and plugging your zune in will charge it and bring it back to life i done this with mine before i upgraded to a frigging awesome 120 GB

Can't read it? Try a different one

My player won't even coonect to the computer? But the same problem. 120G, Zune, Black, and the screen just goes black. restted 170 times, and nothing. Tried this, and then realized it wouldn't connect and stays off, until I reset to another black screen, then it charges while blackscreened. Can't listen to music/use buttons/see anything. Tried on 3 different computers. Hmm, maybe it's just toast?
You RULE!!!!!! thanks bro
