Question about Sony Handycam DCR-TRV18 Mini DV Digital Camcorder

No sound when using Sony Camcorder

When recording using a Sony DCR TRV18E I'm not geetting any sound when using in playback mode or when downloading to my PC and playing back on my PC. It doesn't seem to be recording the sound!

I've gone through the instruction manual trouble shoot section for no sound (page 176) and none of these suggestions work.

This camcorder is 4 years old and I've never had this problem before.

I didn't know that you could mute the sound when recording? There does not seem to be a mute selection in the menue settings.

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

Camcorder audio setting are set to HiFi and audio mix is in the middle.

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

I get video but no sound

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

    Volume is at maximum

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

Yes. It is set at HiFi Stereo

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

LCD video screen is open.I've trid a new tape and probelm still exists. Would it matter if I've got the "16 bit" message on the LCD screen?

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

This model only has Stereo, "1", and "2" settings in the VCR Set/HiFi sound menue. I tried both the Stereo and "1" settings.

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

Just tried the tape cleaner - still doesn't work

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

Just changed setting back to 12 bit. It didn't change anything - still no sound. Unfortunately I don't have an external microphone

  • a1sba May 11, 2008

Just bought an external mic and tried it. Still no sund on recording

  • a1sba May 13, 2008

Very interesting. I've just played a tape I know had sound recorded on it back through the camcorder (VCR mode)and no sound was playing.I also ran the cleaning tape through the camcorder for about 2 minutes and it still didn't work. With my layman's knowledge, it sounds as though the audio head is faulty?

  • a1sba May 13, 2008

I've played an old tape through the VCR and it didn't produce sound. I've also tried an external microphone. Both of these suggestions didn't work.

I had the same problem. There is no sound when playing minidv tapes and also when recording. I searched the i'net for answers, tried them but all failed. I decided to investigate the audio connections located at the front of the camcorder below the lens. I removed 3 screws on the plastic cover. I checked the pcb, jacks and connectors. Then I noticed a loose connector (plastic brown color) which is link to another pcb inside. Reconnected, tested and problem solved. Try it and let me know if you have any questions. Hope this helps.

Hi, I know this is not a direct fix, but if all else fails, before taking it to a sony service center, you could log the problem with the Sony support system. They have many FAQ listings about your camcorder. You can find it here

Good luck

Try a previous tape that you know the audio works and see if you get audio. If you do It means the audio head is working; if you do not get audio you might have a defective audio head.
If the audio is not recorded, the microphone could be defective.

Hi,

with the indulgence of the others...

It may be that the internal audio capture (mic) is at fault. Can you try doing a recording with an external microphone attached to the camera? You can even try those mics intended for PCs.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Alternately, you can try recording from another device such as a DVD using appropriate cables/connectors. If there is sound recording this way then it is the mic. If not then it is something internal to the camera.

It could just be also the audio head.

    Have you tried head cleaning?

  • Louie Role
    Louie Role May 11, 2008

If external mic is a no go, pls try using external source such as a DVD. If still a no go then it is internal to the unit and no amount of setting and configuration would correct that since it is a hardware fault. Your best then would be to seek the services of a qualified service professional such as those in a Sony service center. Sorry but that's the last try a user can perform without opening the unit.

Additionally have you tried Jaime867's post of playing an old tape that you have recorded before and known to have sound?

Check your sound settings. Make sure that the vcr set and the player set HIFI sound settings are set to stereo. Also make sure audio mix is set in the middle.

Ya there dosent seem to be a mute. I read the manual. Im sure you made sure the volume is turned up. The only other thing I see is that audio mix setting that could be causing that.

  • Michael Thibodeau May 11, 2008

    volume is up?

  • Michael Thibodeau May 11, 2008

Audio setting should be HIFI "stereo" If it is set to 2 it will have no sound.

  • Michael Thibodeau May 11, 2008

The only other thing I see is that the lcd has to be open for the sound to work. Other than that sounds like there could be a problem with it. Also make sure you are using the correct tapes. Or maybe you have a bad tape. Try another one.

  • Michael Thibodeau May 11, 2008

In your menu there is a setting for 16 bit or 12 bit sound. Try changing that. Its under tape set in the menu.

How to save and download the video and picture in the pc

So, what did you use firewire or USB? If you want to use SUB you will have to install proper driver, by the way, I wouldn't even try USB, quality is horrible. Best way to capture video is firewire (IEEE1394). You will not need to install any drivers for firewire connection if your PC equipped with firewire card.

Sony trv18e a few things don't work

Night shot light is "Infra Red" and you can not see it directly though camera will shoot in darkness if you slide ON Night-Shot switch.

Regarding playback volume problem, I think built-in speaker is defective ( open ) and needs to be replaced.

Mode for playback of older 8mm tapes using Sony DCR-TRV730 ?

In 1990s Sony camcorder records movie in analog format so playing in digital camcorder like DCR-TRV730 doesn't mean it will be converted in digital format and you can not import file in PC for editing purpose. You will get analog signal while playing back old cassettes.

Regarding SP, LP speed, its decided at time of recording. Camera sens SP or LP automatically in playback and set itself accordingly.

If you want to convert old cassettes into digital format, connect our camcorder to DVD recorder and burn DVD which is digital format, copy DVD files in to PC and do desired editing.

Sony Handycam DCR-TRV18E

Hi there,

Firstly you need the remote control that came with your camera (RMT-814).

Switch on your camera to VCR mode. Then on the remote, press the Data Code button (and of course, point the remote towards your camera). This should display the date and time in the bottom left of the screen.

It should display the appropriate date and time for each bit of recorded video.

Hope this helps!
