Question about ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe Motherboard

Unable to Access Any Operating System

After attempting to install Windows Vista on multiple hard drives I'm unable to get XP, Vista 64, or Ubuntu 64 to boot on my computer. With Vista and XP it gives me a blue screen of death (0x000007E, 0x00000A, or 0x000007b). With Ubuntu it just doesn't start unless I boot directly from the disk. I'm unable to use the Vista disc Startup Repair program (says it cannot find a repair the problem). I know its not a hard drive issue and I know its not an issue with VIsta. Any idea on how to solve this problem (or do I need to take the motherboard back for repairs?

As I stated earlier the XP installation would come with the same problems as the Vista installation. When I first built my computer I used Vista 64 and it worked for the first 6 months. Only recently has it had any problems. I ran a CHKDSK command for all my hard drives and it didn't find any errors or problems with the hard drives. I'm not sure what else I can do.

I've already tried installing XP on my computer and it gave me the same problems as Vista. It's a legit copy that I borrowed from a friend. Vista 64 was the OS I originally installed on my computer 6 months ago and it's been working fine until recently. I know it's not a hard drive issue because if it was then the new hard drive that I recently bought wouldn't have the same problem. Also I ran a CHKDSK command on all my hard drives and it found no errors or problems. I'm not sure what else I can do to fix this problem or even where the problem is actually coming from.

I would try to reinstall xp on the first and largest hard drive and go from there, reformat, and start from the begining. there should be no problem if you do this as long as you have a legit copy of xp and reformat.

Check your system bios to ensure that ata is your chosen hard drive for installation. if you attempt to install on the mother boards default of ahci wich is windows vista or 7 default it will not work in order to install windows xp you must choose ata. as far as weather a 64 bit install is necessary, 32 bit will work on both but 64 bit windows must be installed on a 64 bit motherboard.

HD booting in one PC but not in another

Ubuntu works with RAM and CPU Memory instead of a pc like xp that uses Virtual RAM. If the pc that could not load ubuntu doesn't have enough ram to support the reading of the Hard drive and the Operating System then it won't work and Xp will only run on the computer that xp was installed onto the hard drive.

Hard drive crash, not usable at all; downloaded xp drivers and computer drivers but cannot get them installed. Hard drive not recognized.

When you install a new harddrive, it has no Operating System on it.
Windows XP and Windows Vista, are examples of an Operating System.

Each laptop manufacturer, has their own system of changing a laptop harddrive. Some allow you to press a key or two, to put the laptop in a state where it will save the basic Operating System files, and when you install the new harddrive, it will transfer them over to it.

Some laptop manufacturers do have this option.

You either have to take the harddrive out, install it into an external enclosure for a harddrive, (Uses a USB cable) Then attach the external enclosure via the USB cable, to another computer, and use a 'mirror' imaging program to save the Operating System to that computer.

Then the new harddrive is installed in that external enclosure, and the Operating System is 'mirrored' over to it.

Just information for you, as you cannot do this now with a crashed harddrive.
Your option now, is to buy a genuine copy of the Operating System you had on the laptop, and install it.
Not what you wanted to hear, huh?

You need to buy whatever version of Windows XP it had, (WinXP Home or WinXP Pro), or Windows Vista.
If it was Windows Vista, I suggest getting at least the Windows Vista Home Premium version.

I personally prefer Xp over Vista.
Tigerdirect.com, and Newegg.com, have these.
Look for Software>Operating Systems.

OR, you can simply put Ubuntu Linux on it for free.

Presario desktop windows vista, shuts down unexpectedly

Windows Vista will not install on old computers. If this is your case try installing Windows XP, If this does not work you might want to try Linux (Ubuntu). which will run on almost any old computer with full capabilities.
It is free and you can download it from

seems your MBR is damage. but you can repair it if only you can boot in windows cd and entering in the recovery console.

To run the Recovery Console from the Windows XP startup disks or the Windows XP CD-ROM, follow these steps:
1.    Insert the Windows XP startup disk into the floppy disk drive, or insert the Windows XP CD-ROM into the CD-ROM drive, and then restart the computer.

Click to select any options that are required to start the computer from the CD-ROM drive if you are prompted.
2.    When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
3.    If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the installation that you must access from the Recovery Console.
4.    When you are prompted, type the Administrator password. If the administrator password is blank, just press ENTER.
5.    At the command prompt, type this commands one at a time.

FIXMBR  C:
FIXBOOT  C:
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTLDR  C:\
COPY [CDDRIVE]:\I386\NTDETECT.COM  C:\
BOOTCFG  /rebuild

6.    To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

no warranty...you use on your own risk :)
