Question about Danby DTT420 Top Load Washer

My washing machine wont spin anymore.

It is still making all of the noises, but wont spin. I'm thinking it is because someone washed a whole bunch of blankets and sleeping bags in it. Would that be the motor or maybe something else??

Its motor problem that is making noise If your washer won't spin, check these:

It doesn't pump or spin
It pumps, but doesn't spin
It spins only with the lid closed
It doesn't pump or spin If it doesn't pump water out or spin, check to see if the motor is running, then proceed as follows:

  • If the motor is running, your washer probably has a frozen pump pulley or a broken pump belt. To check the pulley, remove the pump from the washer and try to rotate the pulley manually. If it doesn't turn freely--if it's frozen or stiff--replace it. If the pump belt is broken or looks quite worn, replace it--but be sure to check the pump pulley before you change the belt.


  • If the motor isn't running, the lid switch may be defective. If so, the washing machine can't spin and may not function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.


It pumps, but doesn't spin If your washer pumps out the water but doesn't spin, check these:

  • The lid switch may be defective. If it is, the washing machine doesn't spin. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it.


  • The motor coupler may be broken. Many Whirlpool®-manufactured washers use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. You may need to replace it.


  • A belt may be broken. Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.)


  • The clutch may be worn. If your washer is a GE, it may use a clutch to come up to the proper spin speed. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the unit from spinning well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician.


  • The drive motor may be defective. Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor.


  • The transmission may not be shifting properly. Older washers produced by Whirlpool® have a transmission with an electro-mechanical shifter. If the shifter becomes even partially defective, the unit may drain the water but not spin. This is a complex system, if your washer has a shifter problem, you may want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician to repair it.


  • The spin bearing or basket drive may be worn or seized. These components allow the inner tub to spin freely inside the outer tub. When this is the problem, you usually hear a loud sound during the spin cycle. Call a qualified appliance repair technician.


It spins only with the lid closed For safety, washing machines are made so that they spin only with the lid closed. The lid switch prevents the spinning action when the lid is up.

    A common problem with noises from washing
    machines has been the under wire that may come out of small clothes. In the
    washer they can get stuck in one of the inner basket holes and make a scrapping
    noise, they can actually make there way into the pump and jam the pump, or make
    a terrible noise when the pump is running. Grab a flash light and have a peek
    inside the washer for this. Front load washers seem very common to this happen!
    If the tiny cloth is showing signs of fraying, may be best not to wash it
    in the washing machine.

    Problem: very irritating squealing sound when washer is spinning or coasting to a stop after the spin cycle.
    Case: 1. Snubber damage defective.
    2. Foreign material (sand/dust or grit) is on the base.
    Solution: 1. Replace the snubber.
    2. clean base.
    The snubber is a ring that is located between the convex (domed up) center portion of the base and the domed down center portion of the LEG & DOME ASSEMBLY.
    The snubber has teflon strips at the top and bottom edges that slide easily on the base as well as the underside of the leg and dome assembly.
    This system makes the machine very stable by providing isolation between the leg & dome assy. Which carries both the inner and outer tubs, as well as the main motor and transmission and the base; which is of course connected to the cabinet. This means that the machine is capable of spinning out of balance loads.
    As simple as this system is, if one on the strips is bent or there is some foreign material on the base in the snubber area, the result can be an extremely obnoxious scratching or squealing sound that can make the consumer very unhappy.
    A very similiar sound can be produced when the belt is worn but the difference is that a snubber noise can be produced during the spin cycle or when the cycle has finished and the spin tub is coasting to a stop. A worn belt noise can only be produced while the motor is actively engaged in spinning the spin tub. If it is discovered that the belt is worn and the base has black, shredded belt residue then it may not necessary to clean it out (belt residue generally will not cause a problem with the snubber). It will be necessary however, to find the cause of the belt failure.
    The following procedure should be followed to diagnose and eliminate this condition:
    Removing the snubber:
    The base must be wiped whether the snubber is replaced or not. Any residue whether it is dust or grit of any kind (other than belt residue as noted above) can cause the objectionable sound to occur.
    Remove the front service panel and place the timer in the spin cycle and start the machine. You want to try to duplicate the complaint. Inspect the base for sign of any foreign material. Lift the top panel up and over and lean it against the rear wall.
    You will need a tool to raise the entire Leg & Dome Assembly (to which the main motor, tubs and transmission are attached). The machine will not need to be disassembled; the springs will not even be released.
    Some Techs use a length of two-by-four" to raise the assembly. A pry-bar makes a superior tool when combined with a block of wood to act as a fulcrum (or pivot point).
    Before raising the assembly, pull forward on it so that when you do raise it, the rear of the tub cover does not catch on the rear cabinet frame as it is being lifted.
    Using your body weight, raise the assembly high enough to slide the snubber out. You will need to inspect the snubber for defects or damage. It is a good idea to be prepared with some sort of supports (like 3/4 inch pieces of wood) to slide between the lower edge of the assembly and the base to help support it if it were to slide off your pry-bar.
    The teflon strips on upper and lower edges of the snubber must be perfectly smooth and undamaged in anyway.
    The picture above shows the top strip is bent over. This would cause the distinctive "fingernails in blackboard" sound. Note also the arrow on the side of the snubber. When reinstalling or replacing the part, the arrow must be pointing upward.
    Cleaning the base:
    As was stated before, the base must be wiped out whether the snubber is replaced or not. A cloth wetted with denatured (camp stove) alcohol or rubbing alcohol will clean any residue, such as soap, or fabric softener off of the base and will also cut any waxes or oils that may have been missed by the factory, during assembly. An old cloth work glove would work well also. Make sure that the snubber area is wiped out well. Never oil the base to stop the snubber noise; (such as WD40 or silicone spray) may well stop the sound but will cause the assembly to slide to easily on the base and could cause damage to the sides of the cabinet from being hit by the tubs during an out-of-balance spin cycle. It could also cause the machine to "walk" from its position and cause a "banging" sound.
    Tips:
    Before installing a new snubber, have it out of it's packaging, with arrow positioned upward, and ready to be installed. While holding the assembly up, you will not have time to mess with tearing it out of it's bag.
    When the job is completed, make sure to test the machine in the spin cycle to make sure that you were successful. You can even unbalance the tubs to test it.
    When the job is done, make sure to reposition the machine to its original position and re-set the rear leveling legs.
    Remember: Be careful !! - fingers do not grow back.

Sounds like the bearing carrying the agitator has broken up. I think you need an appliance engineer or a good DIY neighbour to get to the problem. I take it,it won't operate when its empty of the load?

How do I check the belts or springs holding the washer tub


to check the belt or Air shock , its easy to remove the rear access panel , you can have a look for shock and motor & belt but there are a lot of reason for your complaint for doesn't spin out water and noisy when spinning it may be have kinked in the drain hose or the spin start before pumping water out properly leads to load unevenly distributed in the movement of the drum, so i believe that your problem in pumping the water out. Do not do it anymore! It is shorting out and could catch on fire. You need to replace the connector! Look for parts on the Kenmore site

Spin light flashhes spin does not work


The Miele W864 model will flash a warning light and will refuse to spin when it considers its load to be unstable....What I mean is... if you put a blanket in it and the blanket is on one side of the drum, the computer decides that if the machine spins, the centre fugal force or whatever they call it, the weight of the thing inside, will make the machine move about dangerously and will therefore not spin... its a safety feature. My spelling is shocking... I will look at the manual. Which says the load is unstable... more or less... waterlogged garments, like blankets can do this.... I normally just fill it with towels, and wash twice or three times because I wont get a good wash when overloaded.xx

It makes a terrible groining noise on spin cycle


find out if the agitator moves on wash if not then it is most likely a motor couplier. No big deal to change. You can also just tip the washer back and look under and look between the motor and transmisson and see if the couplier is still in good condition

Ariston front loading washing washing


Believe it or not.....its almost always the cloths ( heavy blankets) that one places inside.
TRY:: In the spin cycle if the load is unbalanced the TUB will rock and make that "loose drum out of alignment" noise. STOP the machine and open the door ( IF IT IS A TOP LOADER ) realign the cloths (heavy or more then one blanket) so that it is EVENLY spaced through out the tub.Start the machine again.If it does it again, stop the machine and REALIGN the cloths (blanket !!) again.
p.s. there is a simpler way of doing it but I don't want you to loose your hand in the process.
