Question about Panasonic DMR-EZ27K
U61-*Unit detected an error while recording or playing with no disc in the disc tray. The unit is carrying out its recovery process. This process restores the unit to normal operation. The unit is not broken. Wait until the message disappears* This is what the Operating manual tells me. The screen message is: Self Check did not complete. 1) Press ENTER. Then the unit opens the disc tray & turns to standby. (did this, great!) 2) Press POWER to restart. (did this too!) If this message still appears please refer to the contact info listed on the operating instructions. Unable to clear this message. Have followed the above steps a few times to no avail. Have turned the recorder off at the wall & then switched on. Still have message appearing. Would really appreciate any help you can offer. Cheers I had the same problem (a U61 error) on my DMR-EZ27. My recorder would repeatedly turn on and off while it sounded like the disk drive was stuck. After Panasonic's awful support desk merely suggested resetting the unit by pressing the up and down channel keys on the front until the clock blinked, I became frustrated. I found this site and took a suggestion below one step further. I took the lid off of the player then removed the four screws holding the drive down. After that I removed the three screws holding the drive together. It turns out that the disc was improperly inserted, causing the error. PLEASE be very careful while doing this. You could break the unit or ruin the lens. I am also sure this voids the warranty.

I have seen several postings regarding errors for the DMR ES15 recorder. I have resolved errors on my 15 month old device by cleaning the black spool that retains and spins the disc. Using denatured alcohol on a lint free cloth, I carefully cleaned the hub but did not saturate the material. This immediately cleared the no read and unable to record errors. Of course, I had to remove the outside covers to access the inter-workings of the read-writer.

If fail unplug and hold power button for a minute or two and turn it on and repeat.

The unit failed during self check, probably the power regulation board. A check by a qualified TV/VCR repair person is in order.
