Question about Refrigerators

1 Answer

I want to switch the side that the door opens on my refrigerator. Everything looks simple enough except where the handle meets the door. My assumption is that once I unscrew the top portion of the handle I need to slide out, pull up, the plastic part of the handle until this screw is exposed. Is my assumption correct? If it is correct what do I use to pull the plastic part of the handle in order to expose the screw? A pair of pliers? How do I use the pliers without damaging or breaking the plastic part of the door handle? If I am completely wrong regarding the door handle then how do I move the door handle from one side to the other? Thank You,

This is generic because you did not include the make and model number. Had you provided that info we most likely could have provided you with the installation instructions that would show you exactly what to do.

Having said that... To release the plastic on the top of the TOP hinge use a butter knife on top of a putty knife so you don't dent or scratch the top. Gently lift in and outward and upward direction and it will come right off. Of this us a 2 horizontal swing door model the center hinge is inverted on the opposite side. Sometimes the lower hinge is also inverted. Other times you have to remove the hinge pin and place it on the other side of the hinge bracket. It is not a difficult task but it sure is helpful to have 2 people when installing the larger door. What ever you do leave the pliers off the job / at least away from the refrigerator. You might need them to switch the lower hinge pin installed position. The door handle usually on the lower portion (Screw part) may have a plastic insert covering the screw that you can gently remove with a small knife blade prying around the edges if the insert piece. Other handles it is exactly the opposite of what you stated... you slide the handle DOWN to expose the mounting screw.

If you need more help please include your make and model number and I will do my best to find exact model installation instructions for you.

Thanks for choosing FixYa.

As far as moving the handles. There are plastic caps installed in the mounting holes you will be moving the handle to. Remove the caps gently with a knife blade and use them in the previously used mounting holes.

Refrigerator

Most refrigerators have only one evaporator that handles both compartments. Only the very expensive ones have two evaporators that cool and independently control the temps separately.
Most simply circulate a small percentage of the cold air with a fan in the freezer section (where the thermostat that controls the compressor is getting its signal from) blowing over to the refrigerator section with the hope that that keeps things cool enough in the refrigerator section. If your LG is one of the common ones, it could be something a simple as a large object blocking the air flow between the two sections or a problem with the circulating fan. Also the dial that supposedly controls the temperature in the refrigerator compartment is sometimes connected to a linkage that determines how far a flapper door is help open or closed. Look for a problem in that linkage or damper door.

Tip

Is the refrigerator level?

Many times I come across people and installers that actually use a level on the top of the refrigerator to see if it is level.

What refrigerator leveling means is to adjust the legs or wheels in such a manner that it of course does not rock but that it is tilted back far enough that the doors when empty, held 1 inch open, then released, close without any other effort than releasing the handle. If your doors do not close in this manner than your unit is not refrigerator leveled.

Now there are exceptions to this rule but the exception is a very small difference in the amount of inches you hold a side by side open. And I will explain why. Most side by side refrigerators have whats called a door cam. It actually lifts the door at the bottom as you open it and then it falls shut. Tilting it back is not as important as doors that do not have lifting cams.

Also check your doors every six months and what you will be looking for is if the door lifts as you open it, is it square with the frame of the unit and the other door and are the cams and hinges well lubricated. Side by sides tend to wear door cams where the other types do not wear as fast.

You would be amazed at how many problems you can avoid just by understanding leveling and checking your doors once in a while.

I am sure this will help someone.

Ice dispensor in the door will not dispense ice

do you here anything at all happening when you hit the switch... if you not then most likely got a bad door switch or handle is broke at the area where it makes contact with the door micro switch...if you are hearing noise when activating the door switch you are good at the door... with the door opened hold down the actually freezer door switch and look in your ice maker while someone activates the ice dispenser switch. makes sure the augur motor is turning and if it is then make sure it is turning the ice bucket auger screw fairly simple process to go through... the operation is as follows the dispenser handle makes contact with a microswitch in the door and sends power to the auger motor telling it to turn.. once the auger motor starts to turn then it makes contact with the screw in the bucket and turns the screw in bucket forcing ice to front of dispenser and the dispenser has a flap that works both off of power sometimes or just by force of hand others... make sure it is opening and chute down and out door is opened. hope this helps good luck

Switching doors to open the opposite direction

Look on the other side of the door and see if there's a plug covering a hole even with where the door handle attaches on the opposite side. If so, I think you just unscrew the handle from the top of the fridge door or bottom of the freezer door an unhook the other end and reattach on the other side of the door. And unscrew and move the hinge to the opposite side. If your doors can be reversed the holes should arleady be in place. It didn't look overly difficult when the delivery guy changed mine when the fridge was delivered.
