Question about Black & Decker String Trimmer Cordless 12" 18V

Open Question

I lent my B & D Grass Trimmer, model CST80, and not realising it, it came with the cable all unspooled & tangled up. What is the proper way to re-spool the line. It is the correct .065 blue line. Thanx in advance...

SOURCE: Installing new line on my string grass trimmer

Cut two separate pieces of string, about 7 ft. each.

Stick the end of the line in the hole on the inside of spool.

Wind clockwise onto spool, putting the line that is closest to the ground on first.

Once you have winded this piece on, lock the last 4 inches of line through the slits on spool.

Repeat process for second piece of line, locking the last 4 inches in slot opposite the other locked in piece.

Put the spool on the trimmer, feeding the end of lines through either hole on trimmer.

Before you push the spool all the way on, pull the strings out of the locked position.

SOURCE: B & D auto feed string trimmer won't advance string

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

I used it yesterday and today it will not start. Battery is full charge. Button key is in place.

I would first take a meter and test that the battery actually charged. If that tests out fine ( should read at about 12.8 to 13.5 Vdc), I would then check all the wired connections to make sure they did not come loose.

Trimmer starts but hardly rotates when giving it gas.

Check for a tangle of grass or wire just above the string head where it attatches to the shaft. A buildup in that area can interfere with the movement of the head.

The head of the trimmer will not turn. What could be common issues as a result?

Sometimes, strands of long grass wrapped around the shaft above the string head impede movement. On a more serious note, the driveshaft could be broken, or the clutch assembly could have malfunctioned. Disassembly will be required if tangled up grass above the head is NOT the problem. You can get help here to do the disassembly and repairs here, just ask!

Line continues to advance and wrap around axle

I used a file to sharpen the line cutter which controls the amount of line. After sharpening the small cutter on the trimmer, the length of the line is now under control and now my trimmer works just fine.
