Do you get any red lights?
If you don't get any red light I suggest on using a cooler.
If you do and you are under warranty sending back to Microsoft will be your best choice.

I am having the infamous Red Ring Of Death issue, ...

Sections 1, and 3 are flashing red
- Overheating
Alternatively Overheating can be cause by the console locking up or "freezing" after a set amount of time. Lockups that occur at a specific point in a game are generally problems with the game itself and not caused by overheating.

THINGS TO TRY

1. Let the Xbox 360 console cool.
Note You may have to wait several hours for the console to cool enough. Do not turn on the console when the console is hot.
2. Verify that the console has sufficient ventilation and that the fan is operating.

PREVENTION SUGGESTIONS
To try to prevent this problem, use the following precautions:

* Do not block any ventilation openings on the Xbox 360 console.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well-ventilated.
* Do not put the Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.

On switching the xbox on I get 2 redlights within a minute before I have even started gaming. This is with the machine completely cold having been left for 24 hours. The fan is also immediately working...

Just to clarifyYou have just opened it and it started happening.

Symptoms The two left quadrants of the Ring of Light flash red on the front of your Xbox 360 console.

The following indicator is displayed on the front panel of your Xbox 360 console and repeatedly flashes on and off:
2rol.gif
When the consoles temperature reaches unusually high temperature the console will shutdown the CPU (processor) and GPU (graphics card unit) and the fans will run at full speed causing the noise and red lights flashes at Q1 and Q3, until the console cool down.

Sometime this may be due to the surrounding appliances or accessories of the house: Proceed to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS section below.
Things you should try Restart the console first if this happens again do the following:

Let your Xbox 360 console cool. You may have to wait several hours for your console to cool enough. Don't turn on your Xbox 360 console when the console is hot.

Verify that your Xbox 360 console is well ventilated by making sure that the console is not in an enclosed space. After your console displays two flashing red lights, you may hear the fans operating even when the console is off. This helps cool down the console more quickly.

If the two lights continue to flash red after you try steps 1 and 2, contact Xbox Customer Support. For more information about how to contact Xbox Customer Support, visit the following Xbox Web site:

I have 2 rings problem

You've already deduced that 2 red rings means overheating. Here is a list of what to do to make sure there is no external reason for the overheat. It's all pretty obvious stuff but it sometimes helps to go through it methodically (My friend had his sat on the carpet - he got 2 red rings after about 3 hours)

  • Don't block any ventilation openings on your Xbox 360 console.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console on a bed, on a sofa, on a carpet floor, or on any other soft surface that may block ventilation openings.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console in a confined space, such as a bookcase, a rack, or a stereo cabinet, unless the space is well ventilated.
  • Don't put your Xbox 360 console near any heat source, such as a radiator, a heat register, a stove, or an amplifier.

  • As it happens my X360 has been sat on top of my Amp for 2 years although I rarely have it switched on :P

It's overheating. Consider buying an external cooler at a local Target or Best Buy.

    2 ring of death

MS is one of the worst companies I have ever seen in reliability. If something of theres doesn't work they say woops! Buy a new one.. and they move on to steal more ideas.

I got the 2 ring of death and tried the xclamp fix- worked for 30 min. Doesn't run more than 5 mins now. There is no dust in it and the fans are working fine.

I've read that my xbox my have gotten so hot with the default config that it melted the sodder off itself. WTF

If someone finds a GOOD solution (versus the typical MS resonse given by localwonder)

Also I have run my xbox with a fan blasting air into it and this doesn't affect the 5 min uptime.

My son's ps3 has increasing LOUD noise..sometimes so loud he can bearly hear the games above the noise

this sounds like the fan is spinning as fast as possible try to put the system in open so it can get air into all the fans if it is in a inclosed space it could over heat the system and fry it just try to leave it in open and maybe put a fan by it to increase cool air to system

    Over heating

Ventilation is better if it is sittion horizontally, as opposed to vertically. Also, keep it off carpet and give it plenty of room to breathe. Make sure the vent is clean and clean the area regularly to keep dust away. Also, make sure the fans are working. You can also buy the cooler that sets under it to help keep it cool, though a regular fan usually works and is much cheaper.
