Question about Video Game Consoles & Games

1 Answer

Backstory (this is *possibly* important to the story): I (stupidly) attempted to "refurbish" my ps2 controller to get some more life out of it. I cleaned all the parts, including the green-board (sorry, I'm unfamiliar with technological words). I ended up getting water *inside* the analog stick ports. Now, my left analog is completely messed up. It started with "down", where down was completely unresponsive. As I was testing and playing, it somehow "moved"? to "left", so that left became unresponsive, where I could properly move up, right, and down. I tested it again recently and now it's back to "down" not working. Also, the L3 is registered, for some reason. In God of War 2, I'm able to activate "Rage of the Titans" by just pressing R3. I looked, and the L3 is NOT active, despite whatever's happening (it can still be pressed in to "click" and activate L3). My right analog is also acting funky; it's *extremely* sensitive to the right. By barely pushing it to the right, Kratos will roll to the right. Sometimes it'd roll to the right for no reason. For the record, I was testing and playing with the "thumb caps" OFF, so I was able to get a better idea of what was going on. In it's current state, I cannot use the controller. At all. Do I trash it, or what? Any advice on what to do? I'd like to fix it and keep it.

First point of advice always use a contact cleaner or at worst methylated spirits to clean the printed circuit board, never water as i conducts electricity and can fry the circuitry.
If you have water trapped inside the joystick ports you can attempt to dry it by dis-asemblling the controller and attempting to dry the inside of it using a hair dryer or simply leave out for a few days.
The weird problems you are experiencing from the joysticks is most likely shoting out from water being trapped inside the joystick ports whilst an electrical current was passing through it. I hope this helps. If all else fails opt out and get a cheapo control from Ebay.

I played my xbox for an hour or two last night.... i shut it off and unplugged it and my gf played ps2 for about an hour... then we went to sleep well today when i plugged it in nd tried to turn it back on...

You have have not mentioned what is not working the Xbox or the Ps2. Any way if the amber light does not turn on when you plug the Xbox into the wall socket you have lost the power adapter and do not attempt to repair it yourself . It is available on the net for 20$. In case of the Ps2 also its the same story. Replace the adapter.

I threw out my disk case for The Sims: Life Stories, because I didn't realize I'd need the code. How can I play now?

well, you must either (a) go dumpster diving for your game case or (b) contact electronic arts for a new code. IMPORTANT: Never throw out your game case unless you know for a fact that the game's install code is not contained in or on it

My ps2 is not reading game discs. Screen says no data.

There is a possibility that he LENS is failing. You may need to clean it with a lens cleaner but if that will not work, you might as well send it to repair shop and have them replace the LENS or go and modify it but that's a whole lots of story.

Original playstation 2- 8 years old- wont read discs.

It's a laser issue. 8 years is a long time to get out of your PS2! A lot of people's PS2s start failing within 2 or 3 years. The lasers are pretty unreliable on the PS2, especially if you use it as a DVD player. The following website sells lasers for the older PS2s and also performs repairs. However, it's a bit expensive. More than half of what you can buy a Slim PS2 for new.

I would strongly suggest, however, that you stay away from used or refurbished PS2s for the same reason! You have no idea how much life the laser has left. Either go with a brand new [not refurbished] laser in your PS2 or buy a brand new [not used, not refurbished] Playstation 2.
