If you are having problems with your gas dryer not heating the most common problem is that the ignitor goes bad. Even though it glows sometimes it is still not working properly.

if you dryer is gas check out this gas no heat tip....

If you have an electric dryer, you can have many different things that can go wrong causing the dryer not to heat.

I have a Whirlpool Estate dryer Model TGDS840PQ0. During auto sense, the timer will not move. But during a "time dry" session, the timer seemse to work just fine. Any ideas?

in auto the timer will not move if there is no heat, when the heat stops the timer moves, heat comes on timer doesn't move, when it's on auto make sure power is going down to the heating system, next time send model number and if it's gas or electric, good luck

Estate dryer will not get hot in any cycle, also will not turn off by itself

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Model is always helpful when requesting information.

Unplug dryer before testing.

For your symptom the problem usually is the heater coil burned out. Inside rear cover in a can on the right side. A burned out coil will prevent heating and in the automatic cycle the timer will not advance if the heater is out. You can verify this by using the timed cycle. In timed dry the dryer should turn off even without heat.

Electric heating elment.

Somewhat,

I have a ref. thermometer, round metal type I got a Wal-Mart that I check the dryer temp at the discharge. I bent the metal bottom so I can lodge it in the discharge pipe, turn the dryer on and watch the temp. Normally on high heat it will go up to 140-150 and cool down to 120-125 then cycle back on.
