'05 Ultra Classic .... check engine light just started coming on after the initial start. Stays on for about 8-10 seconds then goes off. No problem with startting, power, etc. just an irritating thing. What should I do to get it to stay off without clearing all the codes and then rebooting with a laptop? Dan in EBURG

I have an 07 Heritage with 17,000 miles. Twice in the past few weeks it has gone into very high idle rpms after cranking; on each occasion this happened after stopping for gas (coincidence..?). I found I could cut the bike off and restart and the idle would go back to normal rpm. But now the engine light comes on a few seconds after cranking, stays on 5 secs or so and goes back off. Any ideas?

O.k. I hope this goes out to all three askers with this problem. First I'm going to make a wild guess and say these are all injected systems, I'm right, wow, that amazing isn't it. This is going to be one of three things. 1- try loosening the gas cap, then starting. If this clears the light, then you will need to replace the cap, because it's not venting properly and creating a vacuum in the tank which inhibits the gas flow to the injection system. 2- Check the fuel filter, a clogged filter can cause the same thing. 3- the calibration for the injection system is off, and the system needs recalibrated. The calibration usually isn't off far enough to be able to tell a difference in the way it runs, possibly a slight mpg difference, but that's about it, and it won't cause any damage. So, if it;s the calibration, don't worry about it until it gets to a noticeable level, unless you just like to give your money to Harley. You can expect to spend about $100, as usual.

DS6321 out of range, no power at base

This sounds like a registration problem, the handset(s)
and the base have lost identification with each other.

I. To address this, first de-register the handset(s) ---
do this procedure for each handset:

0. Start by taking off the battery compartment cover....

1. press [menu]
2. scroll up/down to "Settings"
3. enter * 7 8 9 0 #
4. scroll down to "next page", press [select]
5. scroll down to "Register Clear?", press [select]
6. display asks "Confirm?" or "Register Clear??", press [select]
7. display reads "Ok" and chirps, press [ off ]

8. UNPLUG THE HANDSET BATTERY (why the cover was off)

9. Wait ~30 seconds, re-connect the battery & replace the cover

10. display reads "Not Registered" ===============================

II. To register the handset to the base:

1. press [Find Handset] on the base and hold for
~4 sec until the "In Use" lamp lights.
2. press # on the handset and set the handset into
the handset cradle on the base
3. within 30 seconds or so, the handset will either
chirp and display "Handset Registered", then
"Handset #1" or it will say "Registration Failed".

NOTE: the battery must be well charged prior to the
registration process, a weak battery may cause a
"Registration Failed". Charge the battery for a few
hours and try the registration ( II ) again.

NOTE: the base can only handle 5 handsets and will
increment the number of each handset registered
until "Handset #5" has appeared, even if some of
the handsets are lost/not in use. Trying to register
more than 5 handsets will result in "Registration Failed."
===============================

III. To clear the base of all handset registrations and
be able to start registering again at Handset #1:

1. press [Find Handset] on the base and hold past ~4 sec when the "In Use" lamp lights, at
about 10 secs the "In Use" lamp will begin to
blink.
2. release the [Find Handset] button momentarily,
then briefly press it again. After a moment,
all handsets that were registered to the base
(if any) will display "Not Registered" and be
ready for fresh registration
3. for multiple handsets, return to II. above and
register each handset in turn.
===============================
Good luck !!

2003 Fatboy while winterizing drained the oil very little came out however there was oil in filter..New filter, filled with oil started sounds like usual then the oil shot out of the cap where you insert...

On the softail model Harley Davidson's the oil tank is external and sits up higher than the engine crank case and oil pump. when these bikes sit for an amount of time the oil gravitates from the tank to the crank case. starting may seem sightly harder and seem like the battery is going dead. the bike should be started in knowing that you had oil in it to start with and no giant leak puddle underneath of it. warm up the engine and then drain the oil out of the tank. the reason why your filler cap popped off is because you had probably 2 1/2 to 3 quarts to much engine oil in the bike. so drain the oil from the tank at the drain pug at the bottom of the hose on the high (right side ) of the bike where the swing arm meets the frame (it is a 5/8 socket) put the drain plug back in run the bike for about 5 minutes inspecting with a flashlight continuously that oil is circulating back into the tank. then dran it again and replace with new oil.

Harley davidson evo motor wont turn over...just clicks

Pull the spark plugs out and hit the starter. This will make sure that the engine is not locked up. If the starter does not turn the engine, put the bike in first gear and have someone push you, making sure the engine is free. If the engine is OK, your starter is probably jammed and needs replaced. That wire getting hot is a dead giveaway something is locked up tight...starter or engine. If ya have a large hi-performance engine in the bike, chances are your stock starter won't do the job.

2004 Wide Glide electrical issue's

You might have a bad sensor, The bank angle sensor turns off the ignition system when it THINKS the bike is leaning over 55 degrees. . The sensor is located behind the electrical panel and can be checked with a magnet. Electrical probelms can be a *****. Start by checking your charging system. Put a voltmeter on your battery. It should read about 12.5. Turn the engine on and the reading should increase to about 13.5. If it decreases, its the regulator or stator.
I had a bad crank position sensor on my wideglide that took me hours to run down. Good luck. Let me know what you find

Check enging light 2005 harley 883 sportster

This could be the air filter, check and clean it, then go ride to see if the cleaning cured it. Also check the breather tube for the blow by from the heads where it dumps into the air filter assembly, if something is partially plugging them it could cause this. It could also be the fuel mixture isn't quite right, and needs adjusted. The only way to pull the codes is to find a shop with a code reader. Most likely it's going to have to be an HD dealer, but you can check with some of the smaller shops locally. I'm really getting irritated with HD for going to the electronic era and making their bikes as hard to work on as some of the cars now days. Their not simple anymore, and what used to be a simple diagnostics is turning out to be a major event. This is why I like my 95 model, old, carbed, simple!!! Anyway, Ive ranted enough, hope this helps in solving the problem. If you need anything else, just ask.

98 fatboy engine noise.

Harley's do run hot, anywhere from 220 to 240 normally, and a little hotter this time of year. I suggest running a straight weight oil, and a little heavier weight in the summer. I use Valvoline VR-1 30 weight most of the year, and 50 or 60 weight in the hot summer, and I use Lucas 20w50 primary/trans for the primary and tranny. I don't bother with the extremely high prices of the HD oils. For the whining noise, you need to determine which side of the engine it's coming from. Whining will almost always be in the bottom end. There's nothing in the top end that should whine, and if there is whining from the top, it's usually an air leak around the carb. Start by checking the fluid levels in the tranny, and primary. These are the two most common areas to pick up a whining noise. If it's coming from the left, it's going to be in the primary, and usually this is caused by low fluid levels. From the right, it's going to be either the tranny, low fluid, or the oil pump. The oil pump is a gear type system. If you're running a light weight oil, say a 10w40 or HD 20w50, when the engine heats up and the oil thins, it can cause the oil pump gears to whine a bit, especially in the summer heat. So, check the fluid levels, if they check good, then change the oil, since the summer is coming to an end, go with a straight 30 weight. This should clear up the whining noise. If it doesn't, get back to me with the exact location the noise is coming from, and we'll go to the next level of diagnosing the whine, but I believe that this will cure it.
