Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a 30 year old fedders furnace and the furnace fan runs continuously. I was told by several people that the problem was probably a defective fan limit switch. But because its an older furnace with a service boad or schematics we don't know where the fan limit switch is located. Can you tell me where its located or tell me how to obtain a manual or schematics.

Hi,
The switch will be the silver/gray box just above the burner in the supply plenum...
There really is nothing you can do to fix that if it is bad... the switch runs off of a bimetal spring and that has just plum worn out...

The main thing you need to check is the insertion depth of the bimetal spring...then you can buy a replacement at any HVAC supply house...

Chances are that what you have is a Honeywell product and you can download anything you need from the honeywell site...

I tell you how to do it in this tip...

My furnace wont turn off

Well Linda, is it the heat portion will not shut off or just the fan in the furnace that continues to run?? If the heat won't shut off, it will get uncomfortably HOT in your house, if its just the fan.....well, its just the fan.

More than likely its just the fan and it is running continually due to a stuck set of contacts in the control board or in the fan control board, if so equipped. If it is a furnace that is older than 15 to 20 years, it could be a mechanical relay that controls the fan directly off another control in the furnace vestibule that senses heat in the heat exchanger. If its an electric furnace, the first stage heat sequencer could be stuck closed causing continual fan operation and possibly one heat element is also energized. There are also several additional issues that could be the cause.

At any rate, its time to contact a reputable service entity to correct your problem. Good luck, Linda.

The blower fan comes on several minutes before the

Bad fan switch. It may also be called a fan limit switch. If your furnace is less than 5 years old, the switch is part of the circuit board and you will need to replace the board.

Bryant-Carrier Furnace Fan Stays On

I suspect a bad fan relay or bad fan control. Maybe the longer the control or relay is in the on position the more chance of it sticking on.

My AC unit wont blow the cold air.

if the ac outside is working, but not the furnace, means there is a control problem with the furnace, check wires in the furnace, make sure there is a blower wire plugged into the contact marked cool on the control panel of the furnace

Furnace runs OK, but blower runs again a few seconds later

Could be a defective thermostat in the plenum.
When a gas furnace shuts down the fan(blower) will run until the plenum cools to the safe range. Usually 1 and 1/2 minutes.
Intermittent operation is a defective thermostat or relay.
