I had lightning cause surge. Blew fuse and R101A next to fuse is burned. I don't know the value. Power supply board is looks like model number PLHL-T721A or PLHL-T720A. Don't see any other damage. Would love to replace the resistor, if I knew the value. (and fuse) and see if it will work... Thanks! Jerry Johnson

SOURCE: power supply problem busted fuse

Hello, in most of the new LCD and Plasma TV-s there are special IC-s you can not find in regular stores. Only way to solve this is to contact the Philips Service and order the IC. In most cases the only available items are the complete boards. If you need more info please advice.

vscan is a voltage used to setup the picture for the panal. It goes to the y sus board. The problem is at the power supply or the y sus board. You can check these with a meter.

My panasonic tc-p50x5 will not come on after power outage. whats wrong?

Being in the field of electronics I can not stress this enough....POWER SURGE PROTECTION...and I am not talking about a power strip with "surge protection"...they are useless. That being said you had a surge that most likely blew out your main power board. There is a fuse on that board and if you are lucky that popped and it is an easy fix. If not, you will have to remove the board, get the numbers on it and search out a replacement. There are plenty of places online to get them but I use Allied Electronics. One thing to check while you have the tv apart is to check all boards for visible burn marks or damage from the surge.

Should i change a burned resistor for a better one?

It sounds like you have other problems that're causing that resistor to get too hot, Angie. Carefully check for any other components that are also getting hot when that resistor gets hot.

if you suspect lightning or a power surge that caused the problem, if it were lightning could have effected the power supply board, or if it was lightning it could have went in on the cable or antenna connection. to narrow down the problem, check the fuse on the power supply board, if that is ok then with a volt meter check and see if there is 5V volts going to the signal board, that is the board with the antenna connection, one of the plugs that go to the board probably has writing next to the wires in the plug, if no 5V probably the power supply board bad, I almost forgot, when you take the back off look for burnt parts. if you have the 5V going to the signal board now the problem could be signal board or power supply.

Vcr does not take in cassette, shuts down after fewseconds

Considering both the fuse and the MOV failed from the surge, there is other damage, likely to semiconductors, in the unit.
If you have a meter available, check the components in the power supply section; diodes and discrete transistors can be checked if you have some experience. Also look for standard resistors that may have been fried; sometimes they will only have a narrow burned ring around them. Visually check electrolytic capacitors, small cylindrical cases, marked with uF values and VDC and have polarity symbols on them for any signs of bulging of the tops or chemical deposits on the board & around their bases.

You didn't include make and model numbers so any closer 'guesses' aren't really possible.
Always include these and if you are lucky, a tech with direct knowledge of that specific unit may see it.

TV wont turn on has no power

Hi Scott,

Here are some basic steps that will help you fixing the problem.

I'm assuming that your unit is dead set without an standby LED light and your outlet is live.1.Power cord - check the cord it might be opened (no continuity). This is due to frequent bending, pulling. 2. Power switch - check for dry joints, open contact. 3.Check the internal fuse- sometimes the fuse fail because of the power surge, replacing with new one will cure the problem, If this is the case I would advice you to use surge protector/AVR (Automatic Voltage Regulator). However if the fuse blew again this is an indication that you have a shorted parts in the power supply, you may visit the link for more info. If no reaction and still the unit didn't power up then you have an open parts on the power supply.

4.If you see that the fuse is intact , don't attempt to touch anything because there some fatalcomponents stored electricity enough to hurt you with a simple mistake only. I would advice you to look for a professional to troubleshoot the power supply. If you want to repair it yourself make sure that you have necessary tools and test instrument. First check bad solder joints(re-solder all cold solder), leaky electrolytic capacitor(sometimes it has bulged at the top but not all, you better have a capacitor checker), open/shorted regulator transistor/IC(mounted in heat sink), open fusible resistor (caused by shorted regulator Transistor/IC), shorted zener diode.

You may also replace the power supply board, check it online like and

Also, check if your unit is under warranty before opening the back panel, it will void the warranty. Avail it because the manufacturer of your unit will fix it for free or a little charge only.

Hope I helped you.

Have a nice day!

Thanks for using fixya.

During a thunder storm our polaroid tv went out..we have changed the fuse but it still isn't working..any other suggestions?

Call your homeowners' insurance agent. Seriously, if the set is worth more than your insurance deductible, you will want an expert evaluation on whether the set can be profitably repaired so you can make a claim if necessary.

Was the first fuse blown? Did the second fuse blow? If the answer to both questions is yes, then you have a fried power supply switching transistor - at a minimum. You might even see cracked or burned parts on the board that has the fuse on it (look at the parts on or near the finned metal radiators). Lightning typically damages a number of parts. You may find it cheaper to replace the entire power supply board, and hope the rest of the set isn't damaged.

If both fuses are good, that could be worse news, because that implies lightning got in through the antenna/cable input and zapped the main circuit board. This is the second-most expensive part of the set after the LCD panel.

A suggestion for "next time": if a TV set blows a fuse, get the problem fixed first before risking a new fuse on it. It's rare that a power surge blows the fuse without also breaking something else. The fuse is intended to minimize damage and prevent fire in case something in the TV shorts out or the surge protection components are unable to handle a high energy pulse on the power line. It's not guaranteed to protect the set from damage.

try to look for the caution sign printed in the main board beside the ac supply it is printed there the exact value of fuse. is it totally burned if totally burned you have a shorted parts before replacing it try to locate other defective parts.

Have a Toshiba MW24F11 combo tv. Near lightning strike through surge suppressor. Will not turn on. 6.3 amp fuse blown; replace, blew again. Next step, or start looking for replacement. Set is 25...

power surges generally damage diodes and capacitors causing the fuse to blow, any reputable tv shop can repair for a fraction of replacing this set.

No screen on dimension 3100

you have a serious problem. probably the board as a result of lightning or electrical surge.
unplug and open box. look carefully for small burn spots any where on board and cards.
dis connect power supply from board.
diconnect your hard drive from power supply and board.
reconnect everything and plug in and try again.
sometimes it will reset itself and start up again if nothing serious.
