Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

We have the unit correctly installed in the window and have it on COOL mode but the temperature still is not decreasing in the house. Is there a way to fix this problem or is the LCD screen just not reading the inside temperature correctly?

Hi, do you have a thermometer that you can insert in the grill to see what the supply air temperature is? Like one you use to insert in a turkey to check to see if it is done? If not, you should be able to tell if the air is refrigerated by putting your hand in front of it to make sure the compressor is on. If its on the air will be very cool. If not, it will feel warm, just fan air only. Depending on the heat load that was in the home before you turned it to cool, will depend on how long it will take to cool the room down to the desired temperature. If the led screen is in very warm area's for a period of time, it will be off and not correct until it cools down. I don't know the sq. footage of the area you are trying to cool, but just give it some time to capture the heat load in this area, and keep an eye on it. It should be putting out about 56* F air at the supply. Was the unit new and just installed? If so, you will have to give it lots of time to capture the heat load in the home. If it is a used or older unit, you may want to go outside and wash out the condenser coil. Another way to see if the compressor is pumping and cooling, is see if the air coming off of the outdoor coil is hot blowing in your face. This is the unit giving off heat from the inside of your home to the cooler surrounding air. Listen for the compressor running also. If it is new, it will take plenty of time before it will cool down, its not a central system, so it will work much harder to do this. Please keep me informed on its progress and don't forget to rate me as I know you will be kind. I will be checking in on you also, as I keep your file on hand for future problems and this one also. Please give it some time and keep me posted.
Sincerely,

I meant the AC does not cool

Make sure the mode is set to freeze and temperature is set to below the room temperature.

If it is a split system, check the outdoor unit whether it is running. If it is running, see if you can reach and feel the temperature of the pipes connecting between the indoor and the outdoor unit. It should be cool.

If it is not cool, you may need to get somebody to check the refrigerant.

Air condition jsut 10 month old ... not keeping up whith cooling

If it's only 92° outside and the unit won't cool the house, then the unit is either to small or it's low on refrigerant. They are designed to cool a house with outdoor temperatures up to 115° to 120°.Usually you need one ton a/c for every 400 square feet of house, but, you have to take into account for average outdoor temperature and humidity, windows, doors, especially sliding glass or patio doors and which side of the house they are on, insulation in walls and attic.
The air leaving your duct work going into the rooms should be about 20° lower than the room temperature, if you have a 80° room then the air leaving the duct should be around 60°. if it is then the unit is probably to small if, everything is working properly.

My air conditioner is only 3 months old and the tempperature never goes down to cool the house. I set the temperature and it goes right back to 90

There are a few answers to this problem. Firstly you should make sure that the ac unit is correctly sized for the heat load. In my part of the world this is calculated at around 650BTU (British Thermal Units) per square meter. The second solution could be as simple as being sure that the unit is actually set to cooling mode. If this is all correct, then it is also possible that the aircon is short of refrigerant. You can check this by feeling the thicker of the two copper tubes at the outdoor unit, it should be cool. If it is cool, then you should have someone check the thermostat. Hope that this information helps you in some way.

Hello, I can assist you.

If the unit is supposed to turn off and it doesn't, it will be necessary to check several things.

  • First, is the unit cooling properly? See the section entitled "The air is cool but doesn't seem cold enough."

  • Next, is the temperature of the room adequately cool? If the room temperature is cold enough try setting the thermostat to a higher temperature. If the unit then seems to work properly leave the thermostat set to the higher temperature.

  • If the unit is cooling properly when it is turned on and the room is not cool enough the problem is probably that the unit is trying to cool an area that is too large for its capacity. Use the following chart to find the appropriate size air conditioner to use:

AREA TO BE COOLED / CAPACITY (BTU/HR)

100 to 150 square feet = 5,000

150 to 250 square feet = 6,000

250 to 300 square feet = 7,000

300 to 350 square feet = 8,000

350 to 400 square feet = 9,000

400 to 450 square feet = 10,000

450 to 550 square feet = 12,000

550 to 700 square feet = 14,000

700 to 1000 square feet = 18,000

If the room is heavily shaded, reduce needed capacity by 10%

If the room receives a lot of direct sun, increase needed capacity by 10%

Add 600 Btu/Hr for each person in the room if there are more than two people

If the unit is for a kitchen, increase the capacity by 4,000-6,000 Btu/Hr.

If the room size is too big for the air conditioner you have two possible choices. Either decrease the room size by shutting some doors or partitioning off an area of the room. Or, increase the BTU of the air conditioner for that room by installing a different air conditioner with a higher BTU rating.

It could be displaying the actual temperature of the room. You have to observe the LCD whether it changes.
