Pulley Yanks out of my hand when trying to start storm cat generator

Joseph,

It will be the reed valves need replacing. When they fail it can create a suction as the piston returns. This, in turn, pulls the recoil handle out of your hand (and can damage the recoil too.)

The Reed Valves are located behind the carb and are easy to replace. Be sure to replace the gaskets on the reed valves and the 2 gaskets on the carb, as they will split when you replace the reed valves. If you use a split gasket, it can allow extra air into the fuel mixture, and result in the engine running rough or not at all. So best to change them as you go.

Best of luck. Let us know if you need any more assistance.

I have a 3.6 mercury that runs fine in a test setup will stall within a short time on boat reed block has pin holes in it?

Pin holes will need to be fixed in the mounting block. If the reed itself is alright. Flat, no cracks or stress lines that are apparent, insure the mounting and seat surface is free of scratches and the pin hole situation has not effected this as well.It sounds like it has under a load is where you are losing the power from the plate not seatting or vibrates instaed of closing properly. On most reed valves there is a reatention cover that at high valosities it helps the valve from doing this and also opening too far. This too needs to be addressed making sure it has the proper spacing for free movement of the open posision of the reed. Nice motors! It must have been ran a good long time in salt conditions. Make sure never to run without the cover. That salt water goes into the intake is my guess why the pits are in the valve body. Good Old JB weld in your pin hose and sand flat.

Why would i have 60 psi in all 3 cylinders. ran great then all at once it started to run bad

anything below 100psi on 2strokes is usless and needs new rings as long as no damage and in tolerance to pistons ! reed valves and crank seals have nothing to do with piston compression , they work on crankcase pressure !

Small pinholes in the reed valves

Yes mate... It is hard to say without seeing the reed valve but I guaranty a dodgy reed valve will make running and tuning the bike a nightmare. Your reeds need to seal perfectly and open and close about 2-3 times a second so if any cracks, holes or damage to them then they will never seal correctly which will allow blow back through the carbi and incorrect air and fuel mix to be sucked into the motor. best solution buy a V force reed kit it replaces the entire cage and reeds just bolts in (4 bolts) I sell them for about $160 delivered, or if your know what you are doing then you can just replace the reed petals with new... About $60 ishwww.motoxpartsonline.com

Runs all the time. Why?

The pressure switch should cut off the compressor when cut-out pressure is reached. If however, there is a leak, or the reed valves /gaskets in the head/piston are faulty, the pressure will not build up enough to shut off. With the compressor running, spray soapy water on all fittings including around the head and drain valve. If no leak is found and pressure only builds to less than 50psi suspect reed valves. Parts are low in price and available from various on line stores including www.toolpartsdirect.com Good luck

Hitachi Ec 119 compressor will not build pressure beyond 25 pounds; no air is heard leaking after I power down the machine. Is it likely the check valve or pressure switch?

If your compressor keeps running and only builds to 25psi, I would suspect the reed valves, head gaskets or a leak. With the compressor running spray soapy water on all fittings, around the head area and tank components. If no leak is found, remove the air filter and feel for suction at the intake(make sure head is not too hot). If you feel good suction at first then suction is lost after reaching 25 psi, most likely reeds or gaskets (with bad reed valves, sometimes you will actually feel air blowing out of the intake). Good luck

I have a craftsman 1hp 4 gal compresor. It's not building pressure and air is pumping out of the air filter not in???

sounds like reed valves are bad, sometimes you can take the reed valves and flip them over for short fix, best to put new one in unit.

Kx 125 reed valves

The reed valve assembly should hold solvent withot leaking. Remove for test. Disassemble and clean reeds and reed seat. Perfect seal is very important.

Good luck,
