Question about Televison & Video

The volume on my panasonic projection tv is very frustrating. It is extremely loud during musical parts of movies but then quiet during the dialog and we have to keep the remote in hand at all times to keep it somewhat constant. I have used the users guide and tried every option. Please help

Some tv's are like that. I have had many and worked on many just like that. Check your settings to see if you have a smart sound option. Philips and maganavox have them, not sure about panasonic. Likely not.

That could be one or both of two things at work here.

One is a failing or mis-configured center channel. Crack the manual and make sure the speakers are all workign at the desired level with test tones.

The other is dynamic range (ratio of loud to quiet sounds). In a silent listening environment with the volume set at a comfortable level for the loudest sounds (like during the beginning of some movies you get that THX sound logo or some other audible but loud musical intro, THAT's what you adjust for) the relatively quieter moments would still be audible. Add normal background level sounds of a real-life environment and you can lose the quieter sounds and dialog.

In a perfect world and in accordance with the engineer's decisions, the widest dynamic range is the correct way to enjoy a given recording or movie.

Experiment with the DRC (page 34) for each soundtrack to see if compression might work better.

The vocals on the DVD are being drowned out by the musical parts of the movie

That would seem to indicate a major difference in loudness among the various channels, particularly the Center, where dialog usually appears.

According to the unidentified product's manual and speaker level setup procedures are the speakers about the same volume? Make it so.

Background sound often is so loud it drowns out conversations. Often occurs w=in a movie when there is some background music and dialog. Cannot hear the dialog. Has occurred when watching live music. ...

Looks like you have inadvertently enabled some sound effect, usually these effects can be enabled/ disabled form sounds menu. They will have names like surround, movie hall, concert etc. Go to the sound settings and disable any activated audio effects.

My vizio tv is practically brand new as of christmas, when a movie or even tv is on the voices are very soft and the music or background noises are EXTREMELY loud, so I am always turning the volume up and...

I had this problem with my previous TV (Syntax by Olevia, an off brand). It only happened to me on certain channels, and for certain shows. What is happening is the TV station is broadcasting the audio in Dolby 5.1 format. For some stupid reason, the TV is playing the background speakers (effects) instead of the speaking parts. You get a little bleed-over of the voices into the back speakers, so voices are there but really quiet. Unfortunately my TV didn't have any surround sound options to fix this.

See if your TV has a surround sound option. Otherwise, you will need to connect the TV sound output to a surround sound system that can properly decode the audio channels.

Movies will play fine however the music is at normal volume and the voices are very quiet. To hear them you can turn it up but then music is too loud.

This might be your TV many of the SONY and PHILIPS TV's have an Auto Volume control setting that is used to prevent the TV advert music from being too loud compared to the programs try turning this ON and OFF and see if it helps.

Back ground music louder than voices watching movies on cable

Is this a new problem or always like this? <<<<<<<<

What is your speaker complement? The center usually carries the dialog.

Are the receiver and its speaker systems set up per the manual? Make it so.

How is the TV-related (Cable) audio entering your receiver? It SHOULD be from the cable box, digitally if available, NOT the TV. You don't need a Low-Fi middleman handling your audio.

Music too loud and drowns out the speech . WHY ????

I also had this problem. I read elsewhere that this happens when your TV's audio setting are set to surround sound when you don't actually have a 5-speaker system. I changed the settings to regular stereo and it fixed the problem perfectly.

May be a defect but, if you notice the sound changes with different channels or movies or HD or Standard, look for a volume limiter control button in the menu setup under audio control. Sometimes the menu has a control that you can turn on to limit different volume levels during the shows origination.

Shutting off during a loud part of a movie

Its eather a defect with the reciver top end shut down /over bias system , Or the speakers could be partially shorted, such as instead of being 8 ohms, the speakers could have a few shorted windings from a loud music event?? I would take the speakers in to be checked under load. NOT just checked for resistance.. A regular shop may not know how to do this BUT tell them you need to put the speakers under a load and then measure the resistance . GOOD LUCK
