is this option for vista 32bit as well i c it states windows xp2000?

  • chrome01 May 11, 2008

Tried this and same thing, box pops up than hit continue and it disappears and does nothing. defrag shows in the start up or currently running list but nothing shows as actually happening.

Tried to restart and same thing.

Is there a way to get an actual owners manuel for these **** things anymore? seems all they want to give you is quick set up guides!

Are you telling me that the Vista program has no setting to negate the default so a person can check thier defrag on thier own accord without using 50 differant commands, and if so would it not be better to get a third party defrag program?

  • chrome01 May 11, 2008

When i do this all i get is the user control box which in turn asks to continue or cancel when i click on continue the control box disappears and nothing about defrag now

Hey chrome01 - just wanted to check something. You said you are having a problem running your defrag. Now DON'T rate this yet because it should run if you did it right and I know you did but I have to check - you understand. Did you go to your start button>all programs>accessories>system tools>disk defragment>defragment now? First of all if you did, don't say here comes another person that doesn't know what they're talking about. I'm just checking. I'm coming in on the tail end here. What happens when you click defragment now? Did you know that by default Vista is set to defrag your drive once a week? It may be that your drive is in good enough shape that Vista doesn't think it needs it. There is a manual way to it if you really want to. It's done through your command line. I can help you through it as it has several options and commands you must type. Let me know exactly what happened and if you would like to try the other way. Thanks.

Jeff

P.S. -If your system is slow there are several easy ways to speed it up besides defrag. Wait to hear back.

Hi chrome01 - there's something I would like you to try. I know, all we ever do is ask you you to try things. Bare with me please. You are used to seeing defrag from XP or a third party with all the colors and numbers and all that. Vista defrag is a much more toned down version. No fancy stuff. By now you obviously know how to start defrag through system tools>disk defragmener yada yada. Go ahead and start it and click on defragment now. Have patience please. Now, after you click on defragment now and you think it's doing nothing, go down to an empty space on task bar and right click. Click on Task Manager. When that opens up, click on the applications tab. Do you see disk defrag listed under that tab? If you do, problem solved, defrag is working, rate this as fixed. Let me know either way. I don't think you have a problem with your defragmentation. It's designed to totally run in the background, nothing fancy.

If this finally solves the problem, rate this as fixed and if you still want a third party defrag program I'll recommend one. Let me know what happens. Thanks.

Tip

Speeding up a computer by Defragmenting Hard Drive

Is your computer running slow? Have you tried running anti-virus, anti-spyware, and anti-malware software to speed it up, but to no avail?

Perhaps cleaning up your hard drive could help. This tip will explain, in step by step instructions, how to defragment your hard drive.

To Defragment your hard drive:

1) Go to My Computer.
2) Right click on your C drive.
3) Click Properties.
4) Click the "Tools" tab at the top.
5) Click "Defragment now..." in the middle of the window.
6) In the window that pops up click "Defragment disk"
Defragmenting your disk physically moves files that are similar or
fragmented into an area that will more efficiently use your space.
5) The Disk Defragmentor will analyze your hard disk.
6) After analyzing it will move and defragment the information appropriately.
Disk Defragmentation is complete. You should see noticable improvements in your computer's speed and preformance.

reboot into safe mode. You can kill the power to the PC without shutting down. When you turn it back on it will ask you a few boot option, select safe mode, then try the defrag.

My computer won't degragment

Try this:

Go to Start Programs, Run and type cmd. Click OK. When the DOS window opens type defrag c: and hit enter. If your drive is badly fragmented it will take a long time to finish and may seem to be doing nothing but just wait and let it finish. Could take a couple of hours depending on the size of your hard drive.

Defragmenting

As you probably found out it's not the best idea to pull out the cable mid transfer. Well much like a computer, calculators have RAM and Hard Drive so that program is half on the calculator. The calculator is programmed to fit those files into the smallest space possible so when ever there is a huge transfer of data on a calculator, it defragments all your data. So you need to try to get rid of those half files. I'm assuming they're mirage files that run around 16000. So they're rather large files. What you need to try to do is to try to clear your calculator, 2nd then + then 7 then 1 then 2. But before you do that when it's defragging hit on to try to break the cycle of defragging. If you can break it go to 2nd + and go to memory manager and try to delete the programs by unarchiving them by hitting enter. (some might not need this) then hitting the DEL button. Remember to only do this to the programs you need to. GOOD LUCK. HOPE THIS helps. If it doesn't you are kinda out of luck.
