Question about Computers & Internet

I have a fairly complex problem in trying to get rid of 50GBs of files that contain viruses that were quarantined by Norton Anti-Virus. I'll break it down: 1. Running Windows Vista Ultimate, on a ThinkPad T60p. I had a virus that kept trying to inject trojans into my system. Between Norton, Windows anti-virus and another anti-virus program I had running, I didn't get reinfected but nothing touched whatever it was that was causing the 30 or so attempted infections per hour. 2. I was able to get rid of 100 GBs(!!!) of quarantine files generated by Windows AV by simply highlighting them in Windows Explorer and hitting the delete key. However there was another 50 GB of Norton AV generated quarantine files that, when I tried the same trick, gave me the Windows message "You don't have permission to change these files." 3. I opened Norton AV, went to view => quarantined files and waited thirty minutes or so for the 50 GBs to be displayed. Went to tried to delete these files, Norton hung, givning me the little animated perpetual circle of death. 4. Not knowing how else to get rid of the virus causing all of the problems in the first place, I upgraded to Windows 7, using the "Custom" option (the upgrade program wouldn't let me use the "upgrade" option--I kept getting different messages at different times). Using this option, all of my files were moved to a file called windows.old. 5. I tried finding the files using Norton view => quarantine files again but Norton didn't find them, probably iknowing nothing about the windows.old folder. 6. So I tried finding the quarantine files using a program called Primative File Size Chart, which is how I found them when running Vista, but under Windows 7 it just crashed. 7. So, the current status is: I know the files are still on my disk (by how much of the disk is used). I don't know how to find the files. I don't know how to get rid of them when I do find them. Can anybody propose a solution? A first step would be to recommend a working program that sorts files and folders by size. All input is welcome.

Thanks. I don't want to delete all of windows.old because I am not sure I have backed evrything up, so I am going to hang on to it for awhile. But I will try to delete the program files/symantic folder where I believe the quarantine files are. I'll let you know.

Unfortunately your computer is so badely infected that the anti-virus programs cannot fix your computer.
The problem with so many infected files and they most likely would include infected systems files, which is why you cannot delete them because they are in use. If you could delete the systems files then Windows would probably stop working.
From my experience, the time taken in finding and removing infected files can be very time consuming and may not completely fix your problem because you can never be sure you have got rid of all the infected files.
The quickest and safest way to restore your computer is to re-install Windows plus the computer's devices and your programs and data.
Back up your data first and scan them for viruses before you copy them back to your computer.

The easy way to fix your problem is to boot from a Linux Live-CD like Mandriva or PCLinuxOS , open the disk, locate the windows.old file and delete it. While in there you can look for hidden files and folders that were created by the malware - be especially suspicious of the files that call themselves something innocuous but are recognized by the Linux as exe files.
Or, even simpler, boot from a Windows install disk and select to perform a full install. Be sure to use a full format, not the quick one.

Windows.old contains only the files and folders relating strictly to the old Windows install - Windows itself and programs that were installed in it. Your personal files aren't included, they were left in your place, as were the config files of the installed programs. Its purpose is to offer you the possibility of a Windows downgrade. If you don't intent to do that you can safely delete it all.

BTW to delete the quarantine you must uninstall Norton first - disable it first or it will complain.
And next time set Norton to attempt a cleaning of the infected file first and if that fails to delete it. Actually the best would be just to get rid of Norton and replace it with a real antivirus, like Avast or BitDefender.

How to Allow Something Blocked by Norton Antivirus?

Antivirus programs generally work by finding infected archives as well as assigning them to "quarantine," which basically refrain the access to and from the file. It is the same situation with Norton Antivirus, i.e. you buy a license to set up the program, install it on workstations of your organizations, and it takes care of those computers by ensuring the virus definitions are up-to-date. But somehow, these definitions may sometime catch a file which is not infected. In such a case, you can manually open the quarantine section of the Norton program and restore the file to unblock its access. You can follow the below mentioned steps to do so or even take help, which available on the Norton 360 support number round the clock.
1. First of all, initiate the main window of Norton Anti-Virus program. Here, you need to choose "Tasks," option and then click on the "General Security History" button.
2. Second step would be to click on the "Quarantine" button. Consequently, quarantined list of files would be displayed.
3. Now choose the file in that particular list, after which you need to click on "Options" button. Subsequently the 'Threat Detected' window would be displayed.
4. Lastly, select the "Restore" option so that the file may be unblocked and you could then put it again on your hard drive.
The above mentioned process is simple and easy to follow. You can either do it on your own or if you face any issue regarding the same, you can get in touch with our team of experts on the Norton 360 antivirus support phone number : 1-800-589-0948.

How Norton Antivirus Works

Norton has traditional virus detection method like Signature base and Heuristics base detection, with anti-virus, anti-rootkit, anti-malware, anti-spyware etc. Symantec upgrade and releases new and more improved features with its every release. Signature based detection includes searching for knowing structure within executable code, however your computer can be infected with most new virus which signature is not known. In that case heuristics method can be use it can identify new viruses by variation of such code, in files. Malwares are very difficult to detect even for the most new anti-virus software. If you are using Norton Antivirus, you should update its data-base and virus definition every day, so that when you scan your computer, it can detect all possible threats. Some new features like SONAR, it examines the behaviour of applications to decide whether they are malicious. Various things are checked such as if the program create a desktop shortcut or create add/remove programs entry before determining the program is malicious.

Norton insight is a program that comes with the Norton 360. It improves the speed and quality of computer scan. It identifies well known files of client machine and excludes them from constant monitoring and scanning. It only scans unknown and unsecured files. Skipping the already known files helps the scan more impact.

Norton 360 introduced a very effective tool - Norton Power Eraser, it removes threats which standard anti-virus may miss. It cleans up system where malware prevents anti-virus installation. Apart from these, the key technologies of Norton anti-virus software are anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-rootkit, and pulse-update - provides up-to-the-minute updates that protect against the latest threats without slowing down your computer, firewall software - that can use for mapping and monitoring network.

A Brief History of Norton Anti-virus

Norton anti-virus is a product of Symantec Corporation. Norton anti-virus helps you to remove viruses and malicious codes from your computer, it also protect you from online threats. Symantec programmed and launched various versions of Norton anti-virus to protect your pc and Internet Security to secure your online activities from hackers.

As per history of Norton products, it's about 25 years before Norton antivirus came on the market. The name of the first Norton anti-virus was Norton Commander, released in the year 1986, served as a standard interface for DOS. This version of Norton was invented to protect DOS from malicious programs. Norton Commander was a prototypical orthodox file manager, written by John Socha and released by Peter Norton.

Norton Commander is considered easy to use based on its constant view of two file manipulation objects at once. After starting the program the user sees two panels with file lists. Each panel can be easily configured to show information about the other panel, a directory tree, or a number of other options.

When Symantec acquired Peter Norton Computing from Peter Norton, Norton starts to develop various utilities or applications for DOS, as well as for Windows. Product activation was introduced in Norton anti-virus 2004. Spyware and adware detection and removal tool was introduced to the 2005 version. The redesign main graphical user interface and homepage hijacking protection was released with 2006 version of Norton anti-virus. With the version of 2007 windows 2000 compatibility was dropped and Vista compatibility was introduced, with anti-rootkit technology. Version 2009 and 2010 released with Sonar protection, File Insight, and rogue security software tools. The latest version of Norton anti-virus is 2011, which protect your computer being infected from facebook wall and feed.

Apparantley i have a trojan worm in my lap top, i have norton and caled them they say i have a problem and my laptop is out of warranty and i have to purchase another one is this true

NO, you do NOT have to purchase a new laptop.

What the people at Norton probably meant was that your Norton anti virus software has expired and you need to purchase a new anti virus subscription from Norton if you want them to help you.

There are however other anti virus software manufacturers out there that are free and/or will allow you a 30 day trial period.

To help you clean out the worm in your system:

  • Find out the name of the worm you have on your system (your norton program will tell you this).
  • Go to this page: http://free.avg.com/us-en/virus-removal
  • Click on the link that has the same name as the worm on your system (don't worry about the I-worm or W32 part of the name, e.g. if your worm name contains navidad you want to click the I-worm/navidad link or if your worm name contains bugbear you want to click the I-worm/Bugbear.C link etc.)
  • Follow the instructions on the page you get to in order to get rid of your problem.
Hope this helps ;)

  • if you cannot delete, then just quarantine. but if you scan again but still there are several viruses detected, you may have a replicating worm on your PC
  • replace norton, try kaspersky anti-virus or bit defender

Virus Protection

I have observed that no Anti-Virus software gives you complete protection. Whether its from big known companies like : Norton, McAfee, AVG etc. To Keep your computer safe, try not to click on any unknown advertisements or links on the websites. Keep your Anti-Virus softwares up to date. In case, if your computer is infected than try to use malwarebytes and update it before scanning your computer. Remove all the infections and quarantine items on the software and restart your computer. It will be free from viruses.
