Refrigerator - Water on Floor, Repairing a Clogged Defrost Drain

If water appears on the floor in front of your refrigerator or under your vegetable bins once or twice a day, it could be due to a clog in the defrost drain tube. On some models, this can be a do-it-yourself fix. Below are some suggestions:

Side by side refrigerators:
The usual evidence of a clogged drain in a side by side is the discovery of ice under the bottom basket in the freezer compartment, in addition to a puddle of water on the floor when it runs out the freezer door. Some side-by-side models have the defrost drain hole located on the back wall of the freezer, just up from where the floor slopes up to the back, in the center. In some models it is behind a plastic panel held in place by a screw. Remove screw and panel, and the drain hole will be visible.

Flush out the drain hole with a solution of 1 tsp. baking soda and 2 cups of hot tap water in a meat/turkey (bulb) baster. When clear, you will hear water running down into the drain pan below.

This does not apply to Built In products. Built In products require qualified service. If you would like to schedule a servive appointment, please contact GE Consumer Service at 1-800-432-2737 or schedule a service appointment on-line.

Top freezer refrigerators:
Water under the vegetable pans is the usual evidence of a clogged defrost drain tube. Most top freezer models require some disassembly to access the defrost drain tube.

Water on floor - french door refrigerator with freezer below

Yes the bottom compartment does have a drain opening but to see it you will need to remove the rear panel covering the evaporator inside the back wall of the freezer compartment. See item location number 11 on page 3 of the parts list. That will need to be removed so you can reach the drain inside the freezer compartment. The fresh food section also has a drain. Model #GSH25JSTCSS---Not getting any water from the water dispenser but still have ice coming out---What's the problem?

I have this same model and problem. The water line may be frozen inside the freezer door. (the line enters at the bottom hinge area of the freezer door)

Shut the unit off and leave the freezer door open ( you will need to remove your stuff you want to save first)

Next disconnect the line coming out of the Freezer door near the bottom hinge (should be a quick disconnect coupler, you will need to remove the front air grill assy to allow access to the line/coupler) and lay the line out on the floor.

After thawing the water should run out the line leaving a small puddle on the floor. Reconnect the line, plug the unit back in and test your dispenser.

Although this method restored my water dispenser to working condition, other possible causes for this include the line freezing up in the refridgerator section, bad water valve, bad relay on the motherboard, that triggers the water valve, bad motherboard. Hope this helps.

I have a top freezer model and every morning their is a small pool of water in front on the floor. I checked the bottom tray in the back and drip tube and they seem to be ok. I noticed in the door that...

These doors are not water cooled. Is there water in the drip pan? Likely not and the drain is froze over with ice. you will have to remove the rear panel inside the freezer and clean the drain. There is most likely ice under the freezer floor that needs removed also. Take your time and do not damage the styrofoam separator and air channels.

GE Side by side runs constantly.

The timer that controls the defrost cycle/function, may have failed and there may be no defrosting occurring. If icing of the coils due to the missing defrost cycle, there may not be enugh circulation left to keep the thermostat happy.

Try defrosting it manually (I know, it's a pain - aren't we spoiled?) and see if the compressor then cycles for a few days before it starts running continuously again.

And for Dr. Fred, the above suggestion about trying manually defrosting applies to your problem too.
The exposure to overnight moisture (ice accumulation) may have interfered with the automatic cycle.

EASY FIX!!! The drain is clogged up. All you have to do is take the back wall to the freezer off (lower section in freezer) And you will see another layer of frozen ice at the bottom (behind back wall). Get you a hair dryer and start melting. After a few minutes u will start to see a drain whole(size of a nickle in middle) concentrate you efforts on the drain hole. Now get some wire or something and stick down in hole, then pull out over and over till finally it drains all the build up water around the hole! GOODLUCK!!!

Water leak

If the water is coming from the inside of the freezer (you will see ice build up on the freezer floor) then the drain is frozen over and will need to be cleared using hot water.  If not and if your model has a dispenser, then check the water line connector from the bottom front of the fridge to the freezer door.  Let me know what you find.
