My PC will no longer boot up and I am sure its the motherboard at fault. I get a beep every 2 or 3 seconds and there is a red warning light on board. What are these symptoms telling me?

As you describe the beeps it seems to be ram failure. In case of 2 (or more) chips remove one after the other and try to locate the problem chip.

That the memory is inaccessible - try to boot using another memory, if it's the same then the northbridge has failed = replace the motherboard.

Asus rampage 2 extreme no beeps on first boot, does not enter post, i.e nothing shows up on screen, with the 8 pin power connector in the motherboard the pc will boot then shutdown for 2 seconds and reboot...

1 - Test the memory in another pc; if it's at fault change it completely.
2 - That 8 pin connector is there to provide extra power to the processor sources - either one or more of them are fried = replace motherboard or the processor itself is gone =  test it in another pc and replace it if necessary.

3 beep at the start

Thats a standard mother board warning...back when i built a few computers i got this all the time it meant "no Memory" or no ram chips were installed or that the memory was not compatible it should just beep three times with about a second delay in between each beep...then thats your problem...your ram might be dead! if it has 3 short beeps and boots up fine it could just be a start up beep i know of older computers beeping quickly 3 times before booting....though ive never delt with asus boards only Intel. but i doubt it would be much different
hope this helps,ben

Check to make sure you don't have any extra standoffs under the motherboard that may be shorting it out.

If you don't hear any beeps and your laptop is connected to the charger then most likely the motherboard or vga chipset has failed.
