You need MS Office Excel or the free OpenOffice.org. As a quick solution you can install Excel Viewer, free from Microsoft. I recommend to restart IE8 after application install.

How do I open an .xls file in 64-bit version of excel without it being in protected view?

I was like that when the problem exists when double-clicking in Windows Explorer. Then I get the message that the program isn't responding and have the option to close or wait. After a few moments Excel does eventually open and I can work on the file. I do not have the problem when I open the file directly form Excel.

Excel file problem

Two possibilities:
  1. You accidentally save it as an HTM or HTML file. It will still open in Excel if so. Open the file in Excel and do a Save As back to an XLS (Excel 97-2003 version file) or XLSX (Excel 2007 - 2013 version file).
  2. You associated XLS or XLSX files to be opened with CometBird. If so, right click on the file and choose "Open With," then go to the bottom of the choices and left-click on "Choose default program..." Then choose Excel and you should be all set. Windows will reassociate all your files to automatically open with Excel instead of CometBird.

My excel files is not open how to open it

Hi.

OPTION 1
Right click your excel file, select the RENAME option.
Type any name and at the end put .xls example... nunex will be nunex.xls
Save it and try to open again.

If that dosnt work, go to microsoft Office, Excell. Open and select the files.

OPTION 2
For one reason you see the logo has changed from excel to a strange logo, then you must right click the file, Properties, then where it says Opens with you select CHANGE. -- > Browse -- > and select Microsoft Excel.
SAVE and Exit.

It will be solved.

Had copy of my old xls file on my HDD and the new version of xls file on my pen drive. Both had the same names. By mistake overwrote my new xls file on pendrive with my old xls file on HDD.Please let me...

1. First, don't write to or delete anything else from the pen drive.
2. Second... rename the xls file on the pen drive (use Windows explorer to rename - do not use excel to rename). If you are not sure what I mean, then don't rename the xls file at all.
3. Download a "undelete" utility from download.com (trusted) and undelete the over-written file.
If your pen drive is almost full, this may not work.
If you saved other filoes to it since the xls, then this may not work.:

Some rescue utilities are free:

EXCEL2000 PROBLEM

I think I have a way for you to get this done. Open a.xls and then open b.xls. In b.xls, create a formula in any cell that you want to be updated based on the data in a.xls. For example, if you want cell A1 in b.xls to stay updated with the data from cell A1 in a.xls, your formula in A1 of b.xls would look as follows:
[a.xls]Sheet1!$A$1

You can also create such formulas by following these steps:
1) Open a.xls and then open b.xls.
2) Place your cursor in the cell that you want to update dynamically in b.xls.
3) Enter the equals sign ("=").
4) Click on the "Window" menu in the top menu bar.
5) Select a.xls from the bottom of the menu items in the Window menu.
6) Click on the cell that contains the data that you want.
7) Hit Enter.
If you do all of these steps, you should find yourself back in b.xls with Excel having created the right formula for you. As a test, you can switch to a.xls and make a change in the source cell, and then you should be able to switch back to b.xls and see that same update.

Good Luck, hope this meets your need!
Regards,
RichMTech
