Question about EliteGroup ECS A535 Notebook

Do not detect portable hard drive run by usb

I bought 160g mini portable hard drive run by usb port made by simpletech.
When I plugged into laptop, it does not recognize drive on my computer; when I checked simpletech, it was saying that most likely due to lack of power.
I hooked up 2 usb ports for more power on computer, still having same problem.
Anyone knows why?

    Hi,

Your reply 'Check device manager for USB and network drives. Install, configure device, update drivers as needed. If this leads to a solution, please rate it as FixYa. Otherwise don't rate it yet, and just add a comment letting me know what happened'

I have done these, but it did not solve the problem.

In fact, I have done these even before I sent 1st request already.

I'm sorry for my late response; I was rather busy for a while at that time.

Anyway, your input did not work, unfortunately.

Power issue will not be fixed without an external power supply like plug into a wall socket.

External HD not recognizing USB ports as being Hi-speed ports

I have the same issue. I have 4 Simpletech Signature 250GB drives. They all worked fine at first. After about six months two of them started connecting at USB 1 speeds. It occurs on 4 different computers!!! The post about it being the computer assumes is wrong. How can it work fine for six months and then suddenly change. Also it occurs on different computers. I have submitted a tech support request with simpletech and will post the results.

After a time, Computer not recognizing portable harddrive

Reformatting will be our last option and there are a number of steps that you can try to fix this.
  • Try plugging it in on a different USB port
  • Check the USB cable, try replacing it and see if it works
  • USB ports on your computer makes use of power, so if you have multiple USB devices plugged in, the portable hard drive might not be receiving enough power. Try plugging it in without your other USB devices, except the mouse of course

Please leave me a comment for this.

Simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

There is a power consumption work-around untill a Y usb wire can be purchased; the main power cable must still be used at all times but this workaround should only remain temporary!!!
Simpletech should have included this so laptop users could use the drive as their capacity is better than the packaged slimmer simpletech portable backup drives for laptops, which does include the Y cable....
1) unplug usb while powered and unknown hardware is present on laptop...
2) turn power switch off from the external HDD...
3) return power switch to on from the external HDD...
4) plug in usb connection to laptop...
Autoplay should read from external HDD!!!
**** Save some $$$ and buy a Y shaped cable to provide sufficient amount of power from laptop usb
ports, cause it's necessary to use 2 of your ports to provide power in addition to the main power from HDD to wall****

My drive is not recognized

I've had this problem before.

I tried a different cord and it started working again. Additionally i've had this work for me (see below)

Try This:

  1. Unplug all USB devices
  2. Turn off Ext Hard drive
  3. Shut down computer
  4. Power on ext hard drive (then wait like 1 min)
  5. Turn on computer
  6. Wait for windows to finish loading
  7. Plug in the USB cord from the ext hard drive to your computer (may take up to a minute for computer to recognize it)
  8. If it doesn't recognize it then keep trying it in different USB ports
If it still won't recognize get all the latest windows update and reboot. If that doesn't solve your issue try your external hard drive on some other computers, check to see if drive needs special drivers installed (which most don't).

From SimpleTech's website: "1) I have the drive plugged in but I cannot find the drive in "My Computer", why?
The most likely cause would be not enough power provided by a single USB port on your computer. Unplug the portable drive from the cable and unplug the cable from the computer. Now, plug the cable into 2 USB ports directly on your computer. (If you have a desktop, you should plug the USB cable directly into the USB ports on the back of the computer. If this is a laptop, you should plug directly into a USB ports on the computer. Do not plug into a USB hub or docking station). Then plug the drive into the cable. In a few seconds you should see the drive listed in the "My Computer" window as a SimpleDrivePS."

If all that fails you need to RMA (Return to Manufacturer) your external hard drive. Most hard drives have a pretty decent warranty on them. Your simpletech 250GB has a 3 year warranty on it. Info on the warranty can be found at http://www.simpletech.com/support/warranty/. If you want to RMA it, click the "Technical Support / RMA Request" on the left hand side of that page.

Is the drive running when connecto to power ans PC?
Try it on another PC.
Check the power supply if it is operated from an external power supply.
It it is self powered via the USB then this is a possible problem- the PC power supply cannot cope - Removing other USB devices may help here
