First test your CPU then tast all leads that are attached to your hard drive sounds like a faulty lead of some sorts then
try replacing all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive

ATX motherboard connector pin out


Black=0V(GND)
Yellow=12V
Red=5V
Orange=3.3V
Purple=5Vsb(everytime on)
Gray is PWRGOOD or PWROK(pwr=power) must be at 5v
White=-5V(optional)
Blue=-12V
Green is PWRon must be connected to a black wire to turn on the PSU

Computer shouts down in 15 to 20 seconds after starting


The specs say the PSU is ATX compatible. Whether that is for the connector only or for the whole power supply is something you will have to determine.

If you have an ATX power supply handy (like in an old computer) give it a try. This one is only 300 Watts so it won't likely be expensive to replace.

How to power up a compaq 243890-001 power supply without the the motherboard? Its not green to ground


Remove Power Supply
1 . Shut down your computer and unplug the power cord and all cables connected to the system.

2 . Open the computer case and disconnect all power connectors from the motherboard, drives, cards and fans.

3 . Remove the four screws that secure the power supply to the case. These screws are located on the back of the computer case, at each corner of the power supply.

Wire and Start Power Supply
1 . Switch the power supply to the "Off" (sometimes "O") setting.

2 . Insert the end of one wire from a single pole, single throw (SPST) switch into the green wire of the ATX power connector (the largest power supply connector).

3 . Insert the end of the other wire from the SPST switch into the black wire of the ATX power connector. If your power supply has two black wires, connect the SPST to the black wire directly beside the green wire.

4 . Wrap electrical tape around the ATX power connector and wires from the SPST switch to hold them in place. Make sure there is no exposed copper or silver wire from the SPST switch wires.

5 . Turn the SPST switch to the "Off" position, if not already set. Plug the power supply into the wall outlet and switch it to the "On" (sometimes "I")setting.

6 . Connect any other computer components that you wish to operate without the motherboard, such as fans, drives or cards. Turn the SPST to the "On" setting to activate the power supply.

Bad Power Supply, sscorbett.

Usually you have enough power to light LED lights, (Like the harddrive activity LED light for add-in cards, that you see on the motherboard), and spin fans, but Not enough power to turn the Processor on.

The Dimension 8400 comes with an ATX style of Power Supply, that has a maximum rated Wattage of 250 Watts.
1) ALL of the LED lights combined use less than 1 Watt of power.
2) EACH fan uses 2 to 3 Watts
3) A typical Processor can use 51 to 125 Watts.

Your Power Supply just has enough power to light that LED light.
Weak voltage power rail.
Replace the Power Supply.

[ There are three power rails inside that SMPS.
Switched-Mode Power Supply.

1) The 3.3 Volt power rail
2) The 5 Volt power rail
3) The 12 Volt power rail ]

The ATX form factor for a Power Supply refers to the size, and shape of the case, for one.

You may have a Power Supply with these dimensions, and needed power cables, in an unused computer.
Perhaps someone has upgraded to a better computer, and has an unused computer that you can temporarily borrow the Power Supply for a test unit.

Make sure it has at least 250 Watts (Maximum rated wattage), plus,

1) 20-pin ATX main power cable. (Or a 20 + 4-pin ATX main power cable)

Test whether it is the Power On switch, or the Power Supply. Since the LAN card bit the dust, you may be looking at a worse problem, though.

Bypass the Power On switch.

If the Power Supply comes on, the problem is the switch.

If the Power Supply does not readily come on, the problem is the Power Supply.

To bypass the Power On switch, you will be using a jumper wire on the
24-pin ATX main power cable connector.

Motherboard orientation:
Processor to the top, Ram Memory slots to the right.

Number 7 - main power connector (ATX_POWER), is the
24-pin ATX main power cable connector, on your motherboard.

Referring back to the Playtool link, you will see a wire with Green insulation on it.
This is the Soft Power On wire. (PS_ON)

A jumper wire is used to connect it to ANY Black wire.
ALL Black wires are Ground wires.

[This is a DC circuit. There is a Positive, and a Negative.
A Ground wire is a Negative wire.

The green Soft Power On wire, is a positive wire containing 5 Volts.
You are completing a circuit.
The Soft Power On circuit.
You are bypassing the Power On switch]

There is no splicing of the wires to connect the jumper wire.
The jumper wire will go down into the socket holes, of the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector.

One end of the jumper wire goes down into the socket hole, containing the green Soft Power On wire.
The other end of the jumper wire goes down into a socket hole, with ANY Black wire.

The 24-pin ATX main power cable, is connected to the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, on the motherboard.
Just as shown in the photo to the far right on the Playtool link.

The back of the 24-pin ATX main power cable's connector, is where the wires come in.
(The front of the power cable's connector is plugged into the motherboard)

I use a jumper wire that is approximately 3 inches long. (7.62cm)
An insulated wire. Both ends of the insulated wire are stripped of insulation, approximately 1/2 inch. (1.27cm)

One bare end of the jumper wire, goes down into the socket hole of the Green wire. Right next to the wire.
It has to go pretty far down in there.

At the end of each power wire, going into the 24-pin ATX main power cable connector, is a metal terminal pin. (Actually is a round hollow metal pin)
The jumper wire's bare end Must touch that metal pin.

The other end of the jumper wire, goes down into ANY socket hole with a Black wire.
(ALL Black wires are Ground wires)

Power Supply (Computer) plugged into power, the jumper wire is inserted.
The contact is a very BRIEF one. No more than 2 seconds.
(The Power On switch is a Momentary Contact Switch)

I suggest you also check the 12 Volt power rail. Check it with everything plugged in, inside the computer, and the computer on.
You need the Power Supply to have a load to get an accurate test.

There are 3 Voltage power rails in the Inspiron SMPS.
(Switched-Mode Power Supply, or just Power Supply for short)

A) The 3.3 Volt power rail
B) The 5 Volt power rail
C) The 12 Volt power rail.

The main one to check is the 12 Volt power rail.
[Orange wires are 3.3 Volt.
Red wires are 5 Volt.
Yellow wires are 12 Volt ]

The Positive (Red probe lead of the multimeter, is connected to any Yellow wire, coming out of the Power Supply.
The Negative (Black) probe lead of the multimeter, is connected to any Black (Ground) wire.

See if there is an unused standard 4-pin Peripheral power cable.
It has 1 Red wire, 1 Yellow wire, and two Black wires.
Connect to the Yellow wire, and to one of the Black wires.

[Multimeter function set to DC Volts. If it has it, set it to the 0 to 50 Volt scale]

11 to 13 Volts is Okay, but I prefer the voltage to closer to 12.
11 Volts indicates it's time for a new Power Supply.

Yeah I have seen switches fail a few times, its rare though, trace the wire back to your motherboard and disconnect the lead, then short the pins. If it comes on replace the switch, if it doesnt reset the bios via a the jumper and try again, disconnect the long ATX cable from the mother board and all power connectors from peripheral devices and on the Long ATX connector that was connected to the motherboard you will see a green wire, connect your mains to the power supply and short the green wire on the ATX connector with the black wire next to it, the power supply should fire up, if it doesnt try a new power lead and outlet, if it still does not fire up its your powersupply. If however you power supply does power up you should reconnect everything and try your power switch and shorting power switch pins on motherboard again, if the power supply does not come on then yor motherboard should be replaced.

System won't turn on but when i pushg down on one side of the power suply connectore the fan starts running but computer stioll won't turn on it used to boot up then opne day stopped


It sounds like you have a faulty connector - I would return the item under warranty. Otherwise, if it is out of warranty, you will have to source a new motherboard.

I have an old e machine 500 (origional operating system was windows 98). I am replacing the ATX switching power supply , 230 wat, model lp6100a. My problem is connecting it. I know all the connectors...


The old AT power supply that these old computers uses has two six pin socket connectors and these are different to the ATX connector.
You cannot buy these power supply now, most likely you might find one/computer in a junk shop.
If you have electronic knowledge you might be able to cut off the connectors from the old power supply and connect it to the ATX power supply and modify the ATX power supply so you can switch on the power to the old computer. The old AT power supply uses a mains power switch whereas the ATX uses low voltage to turn on the power supply.
