You can tell any program in Windows 7 to run in Windows98 compatible mode. The standard format on windows2000 was fat32 Windows7 should run it but try to right click on the opening program and run it in 98 compatible mode. If not then XP mode Windows XP would run in either format fat32 or NTFS.

Seagate desktop expansion Xbox 360 hard drive format problem

Should work. Xbox uses FAT32, the same as Windows XP, Vista, 7 and 8 can all read it. When plugged into the computer can you see the disk in Disk Management?

I need to replace the (failed) HD with a Seagate 80GB which is currently formatted FAT32. Is this OK or do I need to reformat as NTFS? Using WinXP

I'd use NTFS but you can make up your own mind here....

http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/choosing_between_ntfs_fat_and_fat32.mspx?mfr=true

If you have old computers that need to access files on yours go FAT or FAT32. If you intend to or would like to add huge hard drives in the future (over 2 TB) go NTFS.

I wish to use the seagate hardrive to back up music on a brennan jb7 i am having problems formatting the seagate to fat32

Im not sure why you want Fat32 but with that old file system a partitition cant be larger than 32GB otherwise it wont let you format with Fat32. You can create as many partitions as you like maybe have some Fat32 and some NTFS if you like. Just typy in disk management where you normally do a search or run with XP and that will let you organise all of your partitions. Cheers and please vote

Hi,

Welcome to Fixya. If you want to use the drive to your PS3 Console you can still do a Quick Format on the Hard Drive but make sure you select Fat32 File System type to be able for the Ps3 to detect the hard drive. Make sure you use Windows XP or Windows 7 on formatting the hard drive to Fat32 because Windows Vista dont have Fat32 it uses ExFat.

Thanks for using Fixya.

How do I format my new Seagate 500GB FreeAgent GoFlex Hard Drive to Fat32 for use with Xbox 360? I am using Windows 7 and when I open up the formatting options only NTFS and exFAT are available.

Windows Disk Management can only format a hard drive less than 32 GB to FAT32. If you want to format your 500GB drive to Fat 32, you need to use third party program like AOMEI Partition Assistant. http://www.disk-partition.com/free-partition-manager.html

Please format the disk. You will get the disk space back. If your new pc is running windows NT, 2000, XP, or Vista, while formatting keep the file system NTFS.

Drivers required

SCSI Drivers are only an optional part.
This is not a problem with your driver floppies.

The problem is with the linux being preinstalled on the HD.

Linux uses many types of file-systems. Even if it was NTFS or FAT, it is most probable that windows xp cd won't be able to recognize it; because, it may use unsupported method of formatting.

What you have to do is;
1. Format the two HDs by either
  • Moving it to another windows or linux computer and fully formatting the Hard Disks using fat32 or NTFS (supported by windows). If it is a windows PC using for formatting, no problems. If it is a linux system, delete all partitions, and format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
  • By a linux installation CD and here too, format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS and here, ONLY CREATE ONE FULL PARTITION COVERING ENTIRE SIZE OF DISK.
2. Install the windows xp in it, using the same booting from CD Porcess. Here, you may or may not choose to install the SCSI drivers ( the floppy you got by pressing F2 when it says to do so in the installation immediately). It is good not to install the SCSI drivers if it is not a necessity for you.

Now, you can create any number of partition, format, etc during win XP installation.
