This Garmin GPS is not a touch screen and has already been reset. I have selected all 8 communication protocols in the GPS set up even though the software says to place it in Garmin (host) mode. My instincts tell me that this is purely a com's problem but I have changed everything from altering the port settings to different speeds to changing the parity etc, all to no avail. I've tried in on 3 computers and 1 netbook and have downloaded up to date drivers for the serial/usb cable, it just won't see the GPS when I attach it.

all usb ports are 2.0 and the serial cable has been tested out and is fully working. Other groups around the net have had Garmin 76 users with the same problem but non of them offer a solution that works

Replace the USB wire which you are connecting between the GPS and the COMPUTER then check. Also try connecting any other USB device like printer or pendrive in the same usb slot of the computer and check if its getting detected by the pc when you connect the printer or pen drive. If other device getting detected and usb wire changed but still the problem is same and GPS not getting detected then the problem is not with your computer or your GPS.The problem is related to the usb port of the GPS.The usb port in the gps is got loose internally. That usb port in the gps has to be resoldered and checked. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation

Change the usb port ..cause some are on 1.0 and some 2.0 ..and be sure the device is powered and on ..when you connect it ..and it has to see it ..if it doesn't see it at least like unknown usb device ..than the cable may be damaged..

Hello,

I suggest you reset your GPS, to reset your gps, follow this steps, turn off Garmin device. Press down on bottom right corner of the touchscreen, and then power on the GPS unit. You should be prompted whether do you really want to erase all user data, or asked if do you really want to start up in maintenance mode. Press “Yes” to reset (warning: all data will be erased and lost, so backup before proceeding) or enter maintenance mode.
Once the Garmin GPS unit is reset, remember to place the device outside where there is a clear unobstructed view of the sky for 15 – 30 minutes in order for it to requires fix to GPS satellites. with this, this should fix the problem.

Take care.

How do i connect my sat nav to the internet

The power lead should also act as a USB connected, connect via the USB port in your laptop or P.C and install the software, if you have no software disk then the software might be preloaded in the satnav, if so, the PC or laptop will recognise this.

Hi fire1961,

Downloading data from my FURUNO GP-30 gave me no problems. But it took me long time to figure out why I coudn't upload waypoints and routes to the GP-30 via the serial port in my ThinkPad T30.

I tried nearly everything tested the cable, tested a lot of different software and even wrote a little c-program to communicate with the serial port. I also tried a serial-to-usb converter with no results. Then I stumbled over this RS232 Tutorial. According to this - serial ports are not just serial port but can be divided into three general categories:

The types of driver ICs used in serial ports can be divided into three general categories:

* Drivers which require plus (+) and minus (-) voltage power supplies such as the 1488 series of interface integrated circuits. (Most desktop and tower PCs use this type of driver.)
* Low power drivers which require one +5 volt power supply. This type of driver has an internal charge pump for voltage conversion. (Many industrial microprocessor controls use this type of driver.)
* Low voltage (3.3 v) and low power drivers which meet the EIA-562 Standard. (Used on notebooks and laptops.)

Then I installed the waypoint upload software to my ten years old Compaq Presario and suddenly I could upload routes and waypoints but only via the on board serial port. The serial-to-usb converter didn't still work.

So if people experience no result trying to upload data to these old GP-30's from their notebooks and laptops. Then I think it could be a matter of these Low voltage ports not are able to provide the FURUNO device with enough voltage. See the above RS232 Tutorial.

Best Regards

Garmin GPS III Pilot to PC communication problem

If it were doing this just on the Vista machine I would say it was Vista related but since you are getting it from an xp machine as well the problem is either cable or the gps unit. You don;t say if this just started happening or ? If you can try out the cable on something else to make sure so you can eliminate it. About the only thing you can do is to make sure the port settings in the pilot are set correctly. Generally the slower the better if you are having communication problems as this makes the signal timing not as critical. Try 9600 baud to start. Make sure that the data bits are also set roght. This is the 8n1 or 7n1 thing you see. I can;t think of what the default is on the garmin but as long as both pc and garmin have speed, bits, parity, and stop but set the same they should talk.

Try to download from the unit as well as upload.Unfortunetly you can only change the speed and protocal or reset the unit. You won't be able to fix it if is a hardware thing. If you are using a USB to Serial adapter then I would say that is your problem or could be. Cheaper ones just don't work often on higher port speeds. You might want to try the gps on a pc with a actual serial port if you are using one. If it works then you should try a different brand of adapter or really slow down the speeds.

This won;t solve it unless you luck out but it should let you know where the problem is.
