Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive

1 Answer

Hi, I've got several HD harddrives and for some reason one of them (which I use as an archive and so has been idle for a few months) is suddenly unrecognized by my iMac. It makes a clicking sound, but does not mount. The Mac is a 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 duo and I'm on OS X v.10.5.8. Any idea how I can recover my data?

If the drive is making the "Click of Death" then most likely the only way to recover the data is to send the drive to a data recovery specialist (DriveSavers, On-Track et al) recovery of data can be pricy.
It is possible the drive enclosure itself is bad, you could try moving the drive to another enclosure and see if it works there, but that is a stretch

My external hd (fantom titanium) doesn't regularly open on my mac suddenly

fouad,

Inside the case of that Fantom is a regular harddrive.

Also inside that outer case is a small circuit board, that either the harddrive plugs directly into it; or there is an interface block the harddrive plugs into, and there are wires from it, that connect to the small circuit board.

(The USB cable is connected to the small circuit board)

It is this small circuit board that usually goes bad.

My suggestion is to remove the harddrive inside, purchase an economical external enclosure, and install the harddrive in it.
Have your harddrive back, and be able to use it as an external harddrive again also.

The Harddrive Inside:
Harddrives are measured by their Width.
A laptop harddrive is 2.5 inches across in width. (2-1/2 inches)
A desktop harddrive is 3.5 inches.

The Fantom Titanium II 500GB's harddrive inside, is 3.5 inches,

Details > Physical Spec > Form Factor > 3.5

What I can't tell you is whether it is an IDE (PATA) harddrive, or a SATA harddrive.
However this external enclosure for 3.5 inch harddrives, is for both IDE, (PATA), and SATA harddrives,

[ You can also look at the label on the harddrive, and look up it's model number online, to see if it is IDE or SATA. Just type the model number in your search bar ]

Just want to include information on IDE (PATA), and SATA, in case you are interested,

SATA: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA

I need a harddrive ribbon cable for Getac A770. I have caddy.

Try e Bay, I've found several unique computer cables I needed there, including SATA & PATA cables that were too expensive locally.

I also used that same resource to stock up on extra cables for PC expansions & repairs. They take a while, but they are priced low.
I've experienced very few issues with products purchased new from overseas.

Good luck!

Harddrive has probably crashed or the connection have become loose. Flip the laptop over and look for the Harddrive assembly. Usually has 1 screw holding it in place. If you feel comfortable enough - remove the screw and pull the HD out and slide it back into place. See if the connections are simply loose.. If that does not work you probably need to replace the HD.

Operation of LaCie d2 Quadra 320 GB Professional Hard drive

So the problem is that you cant put your mail archives from Outlook Express on the HD?

You can create mail archives in Outlook, and I suppose you are then able to save them on that harddisk. If you cannot, I suggest you create the archive on your internal harddisk and then copy-paste it to the external harddrive.

I hope this is what you were looking for,
