Question about Akai PDP4225M 42 in. Plasma Television

2 Answers

I have a 4 year old PDP4225M. When I press the Standby button in the morning, the picture alternates between black and static. Sometimes it goes all black. Then depressing the Standby button does nothing. I have to power the unit off and back on again. Then depress the Standby button, which yields more alternating static/blackness. As the unit 'warms up' the picture slowly comes into focus and is fine for the rest of the day. But the problem is getting progressively worse.

Thanks. Would the faulty capacitor be on the main supply board or another board? I have seen elsewhere that capacitors which generally fail tend to be domed rather than flat on top. Is this the best way to identify the faulty capacitor?

Above is your service manual below is your user manual.
http://www.retrevo.com/support/Akai-PDP4225M-TVs-manual/id/741bh143/t/2/

Use the service manual to troubleshoot and attempt repair.
When a problem like this occurs usually it is a thermal problem, and the component will NOT work until it reaches a specific temperature. Again usually it is either IN the PSU, or in the Color engine. Either way it may be able to be diagnosed with Freeze spray, once the TV is working OK, you simply spray the freeze spray on suspected components, when the bad part is sprayed the TV will immediately Fault. Then you know at least you are in the area, if not on the exact bad component. replacement is the only option. Also remember that may faults have a Cause and a symptom, meaning that usually you have the actual faulty component and there is usually something that has caused it to fault in the first place accordingly BOTH must be fixed, the actual faulty bit and the component damaged.
Now if you do NOT wish to DIY, then you should contact Akai, and ask them for a referral to an authorised service center, now when you take the set in, ask them for a "Quote" before allowing any work to commence that way you can make an informed decision as to repair or replace.

You have a bad electrolytic fiter capacitor this shouldnt be an expensive fix but you will have to tqake the back off your set and check the capacitors both through mount and surface mount. Your capacitor will eventually fail causing you to loose your picture.

Picture on 15 year old Trintron comes on briefly then goes black

if the sound goes out its not a tube problem . a bad tube would have no effect on the sound .you problem (my guess) is in the power supply . a modern tv power supply has parts of it that stay on all the time unpluging it is not the problem its when you plug it in ! the power supply gets a JOLT . you might get away with it ,you might not . thats why we install surge arrestors on power plugs and with expensive tvs i recomend a UPS a power unit that keeps the tv powered even wnen the line power is out . thats keeps everthing in the sets nice and even ,so the tv lasts longer ... a modern tv turned off uses about 1.40 in electric a YEAR in standby mode , so what are you saveing if you send you set to the landfill early and have to buy a new one ? over 1.40 in electric ? . turn down you water heater or something else simple dont be blowing out you electronics for the sake of a few cents ..... good luck .... if this answer helped please rate a 3 or 4 , this high rateing will hepl keep me in the paid answer department . thank you

Picture stays on black

I had this same exact issue yesterday. I own the same TV model and here is what SONY had me do to get the picture back. Ultimately the picture comes back, but it will be very dim and needs repair. Most likely a power supply issue. Try these steps:

-Press power off or leave with standby light on for 5 minutes (wait the full 5 minutes)
-Unplug TV / Press top buttons 5 times each to remove static from system boards (yes, each button 5 times each)
-Wait one full minute and plug TV in and press power on

Sony KV-32S26 goes in to stanby wen pictures comes up...

I had a similar problem, I removed the rear t.v. cover adjusted the focus and green pots for the best picture. I use a mirror in front of the t.v. and tweaked the pots.
If you get out of tolerances it will black out of your t.v. have patience in trying this. I hope this helps.
