Question about Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have built a new computer from scratch and when I did I bought Windows XP Pro 64bit and after I decided I would upgrade my motherboard and when I did I started up the computer again and when it came up I could see the HHD and DVD/CD-ROM in the BIOS but after I exited and started up the computer it should show what HHD you have installed and it showed no HHD installed. Also to add on to that when it starts it says that someone is already logged in as me and I am not able to log in as the admin or owner. If you need info about my computer please ask. Thanks for the help

Ok, well I not sure what BORK or HAL is and why they were installed but I am taking it that you are saying that I need to reformat my computer to reestablish me as the admin right? Now for that safe mode idea if I make a different account with admin privledges is that going to help me get back in with my original admin or just make a 2nd admin account? Also you say that the two motherboards might not be compatible but they are the same make just the upgraded version. I had the P6T motherboard and upgreaded to the P6X58D Premium. You can see all the info at tigerdirect.com witch is where I bought all my computer hardware. One last thing you don't say anything about the HHD not showing up when the computer starts up why is it doing that, because in the P6T motherboard when it started up I could see my 1TB HHD and now it don't show up at all but yet you can see it in the BIOS screen. Could that be part of the problem why it is not letting me login as my admin accont?

Sounds like you made a massive upgrade to your motherboard and that may be enough to BORK Windows as the HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) installed when you loaded Windows may not be compatible with the new board.
If you can see if you can boot to the safe mode and log into your system. If you can, try and create a new user account with administrator privledges, then try to log into that account in normal mode.
If you still have issues, you may need to re-install windows to resolve.

Bork is geek for mess up, HAL is the Hardware Extraction Layer of the windows operating system that allows windows to communicate with the hardware. When you install windows, it evaluates the Hardware installed, then configures windows to work with that hardware. Sometimes when you change hardware, there is a significant enough difference in the hardware to make the HAL installed incompatible with the new hardware.

If you can boot to the safe mode, go to control panel, user accounts, and create a new user account with admin rights, reboot and see if you can log in on that account. If you can, then the issue is the user profile of the account that locks up. If this is the case, copy any data files to the new account (My Documents, My Music etc) once you know you have all the data moved, then you can delete the user account that no longer works.

If all the above do not work, then as a last resort, reinstall Windows

How can change Vostro 3300 32bit- 64bit

You'll have to reload from scratch (not upgrade) a 64-bit operating system, such as Windows 7. Make sure the reason you think you need 64 bits is worth the time and effort of:
1. Saving ALL your Data Files before you start, perhaps to an external HDD, a USB flash drive or a network drive.
2. Saving backups of all your applications -- electronic banking, Email, Address books, etc. (Outlook data files)
3. Reformatting and reloading a new OS (you'll probably have to buy it).
4. Reloading all your applications (make sure you have ************, serial numbers, etc.

Unless you have a new mission-critical app that requires a 64-bit OS, I'm not sure you'll be happy with the outcome. The PC probably won't perform any better than it does now.

Wound up reformatting the hard drive and installed Windows XP Pro 64-bit. But am missing correct drivers for the modem. It does not even show up in device manager

Hi activebiz,
I see you re-installed Windows on the machine with Win XP Pro 64bit but you are having issue with the driver as mentioned.
If I may ask before you installed win XP 64bit did you have win XP 32bit?
If so then try downloading a driver for a 64bit version to make the Modem driver work, having an Incorrect version of the driver will really not show up in device manager, and make sure the driver you are downloading is the correct driver.
You did not mentioned the Brand of the Machine or Motherboard that you have and the modem that you need a driver for is that a built in Modem on the Motherboard or is that a modem external provided by your Internet Provider.

Windows XP Upgrade

completely different operating systems actually... as far as i know that upgrade would not be possible... a full install would be the way to go... back up all your data first.

the beauty of 64 bit tho is it basically allows you to add unlimited memory to your computer.
