Question about Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500 GB SATA Hard Drive

1 Answer

My seagate was inside a Lacie case, the drive seems to be spin when I turn it on however winds down and the power light on the case changes colour. I have checked the status in Computer Management then disk management and it shows up occasionally as UNKNOWN? Or else it doesn't show up as it winds down to a stop. It also shows up just a USB sata device in device manager and displays that it is working correctly but no details are given. It is a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 500gb. Do you suppose it could be the circuit board?

HI,
The usual issue with the message Unknown is that the SATA Hard Drive is not yet formatted. You need to format it first before you can use it.

Cheers!!

    Hi,
I see, when is the last time that you were able to access the drive?

Lacie External Drive won't turn on (blue Light doesn't go on)

Inside the LaCie D2 250GB (300770) external harddrive's case, is a 250GB IDE (PATA) harddrive that is 3.5 inches across in width.

A desktop computer sized harddrive. (May be a Western Digital WD25000JB)

The harddrive plugs into a small circuit board, (Bridge board), and the circuit board has a USB port on it.

Using this Western Digital Passport for an example,

http://www.xbitlabs.com/misc/picture/?src=/images/storage/wd-passport-250gb/p3.jpg&1=1

Scroll down to the second photo, and left-click on it. The case of the external harddrive is shown open.
Inside is a 2.5 inch laptop sized harddrive.
An aluminum tape strip covers the small circuit board, attached at the back of the harddrive.

The second photo down on this page, shows you the small interface circuit board, that the harddrive plugs into, with the aluminum tape removed.

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/storage/display/wd-passport-250gb_2.html

(Another design has wires coming from the small circuit board, to an interface the harddrive plugs into )

It is this small circuit board that goes bad in a LaCie. QUITE common.

Solution?

Simple.
1) Obtain a 3.5 inch IDE external enclosure
2) Remove the 3.5 IDE harddrive from the LaCie's case.
3) Install the harddrive out of the LaCie into the external 3.5 IDE enclosure.

An example of a 3.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

They don't work forever. As you have a power light, it may be worth taking out of the case and trying in a different case. You may be lucky.

My LaCie 1TB external drive (inside is a Hitachi Deskstar, i think so) does not spin up. Its still turning on, but not spinning up. It will make some sounds whatsoever. I believe its jammed.

I have had a LaCie too i tried all manner of diagnostic tools and formating etc none worked so i took the Hitachi drive out and put in another case and by some act of GOD it worked. I will never by , use , recomend LiaCe to anyone.

We understand that your problem is: We understand that your problem is: Hello, I have Lacie porsche external hard drive. I also have a seagate firewire external drive which us working fine. Unfortunately...

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My LaCie 500GB Quadra spins and clicks. Have tried (Mac) DiskWarrior and Disk Utility, but the drive ignores them and spins, clicks, and the blue light flashes

If you can hear clicking then I am afraid there is a serious problem with the hard drive.

The noise you can hear is usually known as "the click of death" when referring to hard drives.

Make sure you use ONLY the cable that came with it or a SHORTER one.

Dont connect via a USB hub

Make sure you only user the power supply that CAME WITH IT.

Most common causes are that the drive unit was dropped or mishandled or just plain old age

There is no known cure unless the data is mission critical

In which case you could sent it to a data recovery specialist but this is usually VERY expensive.

If you are advised to place it in a freezer or anything similar then that is up to you
but my advise would be to run from the person who may give this advise.

This is very old fashioned advice and meant for very old types of drives that used to get very hot.

If it a drive that was / is from an external enclosure then you could still use the enclosure and just place a new hard drive in there.

Another way to test it it to remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a PC with a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE.

Hard drive will not spin.

I have the same problem with the same enclosure. I found out it is the power supply problem. It worked the first time out of the box. But when the black 12V/5V power supply box heats up, if I turn it off, and on again, my hard drive won't spin up. It had buzz sounds and tried to spin. I think they use a crappy power supply that can't supply enough current during drive spin up when temperature goes up.

My solution is to unplug the whole unit from the wall when you don't use it. That give the crappy power supply time to cool down, so next time when you turn it on, it'll start from cold. This solutoin worked for my 300G Seagate drive. For my smaller WD drive, it doesn't require cold start. I guess it makes sense, as bigger drives require more current to spin up.

Lacie hd problem

This is a pretty old thread, but I just figured out the work-around for my Lacie drive with the same symptoms. I took the Lacie case apart to find a pretty standard 3.5" Seagate Barracuda drive inside the case. If you pull the actual hard drive out of the box, you can either purchase a new external hard drive adapter box ($30-80) or install it into a tower computer. I installed it into an older G3 tower and it mounted right up. I decided it wasn't worth investing in a six year old hard drive, so I will be purchasing a new drive and pulling the data off the old one.

Pay attention to upper & lower case - it is important. Turn on power to the RS232-to-TTL adapter and the hard drive. After a few seconds, Press CTRL+z.
