Diskette drive 0 seek failure

Hello every one
I have a dell 8400 and when i boot it states "diskette drive 0 seek failure" I disconect all cables and devices from mobo and it still said same things, also i can not go to Cmos, what could be the problem? is the mobo bad?

Try removing the motherboard battery...wait for about 10 seconds...replace it and try again

Computer is booting from a non-bootable source

Many times this error is caused when the computer is attempting to boot from a non-bootable floppy disk or CD-ROM. First verify that no floppy diskette or CD is in the computer, unless you are attempting to boot from a diskette.

Note: This error has also been known to occur when a memory stick is in a card reader and the computer is attempting to boot from it. If you have any card reader or flash reader make sure that no memory stick is inside the computer. Additionally disconnect all USB drives, cameras, ipods, iphones, etc. from the computer.

If you are attempting to boot from a floppy diskette and are receiving this error message it is likely that the diskette does not have all the necessary files or is corrupt.

If you are attempting to install Windows XP or Windows 2000 and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.

Second, when the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.

Press any key to boot from the CD

Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

Note: If you are not receiving the above message and your BIOS boot options are set properly it's also possible that your CD-ROM drive may not be booting from the CD-ROM properly. Verify the jumpers are set properly on the CD-ROM drive.

My labtop tells me to reboot the disk and it still will not run and you can hear the drive start up but it stops spinning right away

Your HD is dead.Think on the possibilities to buy a new one.But look at this:

  • Check all cards. Verify that all cards are seated in their slots on the motherboard and secured with mounting screws.
  • Check all connectors and cables. Make sure all ribbon and power cables are securely connected. Ribbon cables are easily damaged, especially at the connector. Try a new cable that you know is good. Make sure no connector pins are bent. Verify that pin 1 on the interface cable is aligned with pin 1 on the drive and host adapter (see Figure 2 on page 6).
  • Verify jumper settings. Review the instructions in this guide and in your host adapter installation guide. Make sure all appropriate jumpers are installed or removed as necessary.
  • Check your power-supply specifications. Each time you add a new device to your computer, make sure your cornputer's internal power supply can support the total power demand. If necessary, consult your dealer for a new power supply.
  • Verify the drive-type settings in the system setup program. The drive-type settings in the system BIOS must not exceed the physical specifications of your drive. Also, the settings must not exceed the limitations set by the operating system and BIOS.
  • Check for viruses. Before you use someone else's diskette in your system for the first time, scan the diskette for viruses.

    • Check all cables.
    • Make sure the power supply is adequate for system needs.
    • Reboot the computer and listen to make sure the drive motor starts up. If the drive is very quiet, it may be difficult to hear its discs reach operating speed. If the drive motor does not start up, recheck all drive cables.
    • Verify that for each drive, a drive-type is listed in the system setup program.
    • Try rebooting your computer by pressing the CTRL, ALT and DELETE keys simultaneously. If the drive is recognized after you reboot the system, the computer BIOS test may be completing before the drive is ready.
      One solution is to slow the processor speed during startup. If your computer has a turbo switch, set it to slow speed before turning the computer on. If there is no turbo switch, you may be able to use keyboard commands; see your computer manual for details. After the computer is up and running, return the processor to the fast speed.
      Another solution is to warm-boot your computer after every power-on.
    • Check for I/O address conflicts. To isolate the conflict, verify that the drive and host adapter are compatible with your computer. Turn off the computer and remove all the peripheral adapter cards except for the video card and host adapter. If the computer recognizes the drive when you reboot the computer, turn off the computer. Reinstall the other peripheral cards, one at a time, until the conflict reoccurs. After you have isolated the source of the address conflict, you can resolve the conflict by changing the 1/0 address of the peripheral that appears to cause the conflict.
    • If Disk Manager has installed the DDO on your hard drive and you have booted directly from a diskette, the information in the boot record for the drive may not have been loaded. Make sure there is no diskette in drive A and reboot.

    My Dell Inspiron 6000 has Samsung Model MP0603H hard drive. The computer was working fine till this morning when it would not boot. I ran diagnostic using the Dell CD and the results stated: Error Code...

    Those codes all apply to the hard drive itself..

    Replacing the hard drive is all you should have to do.

    When my computer start up it keeps saying diskette drive 0 seek failure can you help me plz

    if this machine has been worked on check that the diskett ribbon cable has not been put on the wrong way round it somtimes happens, of course the drive may have gone faulty , if you have not got a diskett drive,
    when booting your machine hold down ctrl-alt-del this will put you into the cmos of the computer there are a couple of variations so without knowing what yours looks like it hard to comment but have a look round and you should find a section that has boot sequence (ie 1st boot 2nd boot) this is what is looked at 1st when booting the computer, once you find the disk drives using the keybord arrow keys navigate to the floppy drive then using the plus and minus key (far right keyboard) press until it says none , then press F10 to come out of the cmos you will normally be promted to save and exit (yes) the machine will reboot and the new setting will be applied, this time it will not look for the diskett drive so it should not report an error.

    My toshiba lap top starts up as normal then the msg media test faiure and no bootable device whats wrong

    The laptop isn't seeing the hard drive. It has either bounced loose (doubtful) or the hard drive is defective. You can open panels on laptop and find the hard drive, remove and then replace it and see if it reads. Failing this check to see if it's still on warranty or buy another one similar to yours.

    Is there a diskette drive installed?The bios is looking for a device that was enable but not there.If you prefer to ignore this problem you may do so,however the fix is very simple,unplug the computer remove the cover,there is a coin battery which stores the configuration of the computer you may need to remove it.This will erase the configuration stored in the bios,or you can install a jumper on the motherboard which will clear the bios setting .Remember to return the jumper on the pins it was on.

    Maxtor 3200 personal 200gb drive external

    If you did in fact change the partioning structure then the only recourse is to send the drive to a data recovery center. If the drive is running they should be able to recover the data.

    make sure they are set to main hard : Master on one cable
    2nd : slave on the same cable as the first hard drive
    3rd : as master or cable select on the second cable
    windows should load then

    1st and 2d eide conector on mobo

    Hi, Does not really matter whether slave via jumper or cable select on the secondary IDE. Your mb will boot to whatever HD you set it at in the BIOS/CMOS as the first boot device. The 3rd drive will be recognized as secondary whatever and if your CMOS/BIOS is set right it will boot from the primary master on IDE1. Good luck and kind regards.

    Disk boot failure

    After making 100% sure you have no diskette or CD in any drives the conclusion may well be that the disk is ruined. You ay try to boot from a diskette or CD and see if you can access the disk then. (see for instructions to make a boot CD) "The ultimate boot CD" has a few tools that might help you out. Since you can't boot you must make it on a different computer, though. You may also try to insert the disk in a diffe rent computer to see if it can be booted there. Also make sure all cables are properly connected.
