Remove the top cover and then just remove the starter/recoil unit itself for inspection to identify what the culprit is...it will need to be removed. If it works OK after its removed or during removal, turn the flywheel by hand to make sure the engine isn't locked up and look underneath where the blade is and make sure nothing is stuck under there also. Sounds crazy, but stuff happens.

Starter cord will not pull

The pull cord or rope works on a tight spring just under the cover that the rope is in. Usually three to four small bolts on the edge of the cover to remove to repair/replace either the spring or the rope. First I would try to turn the motor manually with your hand on the flywheel, it should move around either direction freely with no effort. If it does not the motor itself maybe stuck not the rope. Then you have a seized engine and a different problem to deal with.

Pull cord wont spin the motor

The engagement "dog" is probably rusted in place. Try spraying WD 40 on the recoil mechanism as you pull the starter cord

I have a Troy-Bilt Briggs and Stratton 675 series lawn mower. The pull cord is stuck and will not move. I can lightly pull the cord repeatedly and the cord slowly allows me to pull more but if I release it...

Take the plug out and try to move the blade. If the motor won't rotate, the problem might be with the motor and the cord can't move because of it.

Crank pull cord doesn't pull out on honda pressure washer.. The machine is only 3 months old

if the fuel tap has been left on it may have fuel on top of the cylinder and would not able to pull cord.
if so take the spark plug out and turn over, fuel may come out of hole.replace spark plug and try to start. if it still won't turn over, you will need to take the face plate off the motor. remove and inspect if there is any foreign objects. try to turn motor over by hand., grab on to fly wheel & turn. if it moves freely it may be the pull start it-self. try pulling the cord out. if no problem assemble and try to start.

My Kenmore Progressive vacumn motor turns off and on while vacumning. I don't know if I should take it for repair, purchase a new one or find someone who can do easy repairs (family member).

Turn on the vacuum but don't move it--just start at the plug end of the cord, bend and pull gently on the cord, but hold the plug in the socket. Work along the cord while listening to the motor for cutoff. When you get to the internal break in the cord, any bending or pulling will immediately start and stop the motor. If this occurs near either end of the cord, it can be cut off shorter and a replacement plug put on (if on that end). If it is the vacuum end, the machine needs to be disassembled part way to reattach the cord. If the break is near the center of the cord, just replace the entire cord. Good luck!

Gasoline trimmer won't start

This is a problem with the pull start clutch, remove the four screws that attach the pull cord mechanism to the motor, detach motor, remove the pull start clutch assembly, lubricate, clean and reinstall, You should be back to trimming asap.

Starting issues. Can't pull cord.

Make sure your flywheel brake is not engaged or the cover is hindering the mechanism somehow after it is installed
