Replacing "Screw & Washer Lid Switch" on a Kenmore Washer Maching

Model # 110.22642100

I figured out what the problem was when my washer wouldn't drain or spin - the Screw & Washer Lid Switch (how they describe in the parts manual) is busted and needs to be replaced... but it's such a small area and hard to get to... any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello, i have a kenmore top loading washer. it fills the maching but it doesnt want to wash, rinse or spin . please help . i have tried every cycle and still nothing. i would like to know what could be the...

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

Newer model Whirlpool / Kenmore washers use a Lid Switch as a safety device. Unless the switch senses that the lid on the washer is closed, the washer will neither agitate nor spin.

Older models only used the switch during the spin cycle.

Try to bypass the Lid Switch by removing the Console and jumping the two outermost pins on the switch.

This is a Whirlpool PDF on how these washers operate. It has a diagram on jumping the switch as well as a detailed section on how the transmission works.

It also has a troubleshooting guide.

To bypass the switch, you only have to disconnect the power to the washer, tilt the console back, unplug the switch and using an short piece of insulated wire, jump the two outermost contacts on the connector coming from the console and plug the washer back in.

Following is a description of how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet if necessary.

With the jumper in place, try to re-start the washer.

If it works, the Lid Switch is a relatively inexpensive part and only requires you to access the console and remove the cabinet.

There are videos at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html that will walk you thru testing and replacing this part. It may be a different model but the replacement will be the same. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:

Go to the section on the Sears site for the Top and Cabinet parts and you should see #11 Lid Switch.

See the following on how to gain access to the console and how to remove the cabinet

http://www.american-appliance.com/catalog/newsdesk_info.php?newsPath=16&newsdesk_id=131&osCsid=913ba652cd504fb162f87d892bcb427b

If you un-plug the washer and pop off the end caps, you should see a screw under each endcap.

Remove the screws and the console should tilt backward. Unplug the lid switch from the console.

Using a screwdriver, snap off the clips holding the cabinet on, tilt it forward and it should come.

You should have access to the lid switch with the cabinet off and the console tilted backward.

I had the problem with the washer not agitating once it filled.

The control panel has a clip at each front corner. Push a putty knife between the case top and the control panel, at the corner and you will feel a spring clip. Push toward the rear of the machine to conpress the clip and it will release. Repeat at other corner. The panel has two connectors on the back at the top corners. The newer machines will allow the panel to roll over the back, carefully. Otherwise there will be two screws that will need to be removed.

Yes I fixed my washer problem.
The washer was stopping before it would drain and spin. I would raise the lid and then close it back and it would start back up. So we figured the lid switch was broke.

Before you do anything you "unplug" the washer!
You have to pop the ends off the back panel with the buttons on it. Then you unscrew the 2 screws at the bottom of the panel and raise it up. Then you remove the brass clips that are holding the lid on. Then you move the whole washing machine cabinet out. My husband replaced the lid switch. Then we had to figure out how to get the cabinet back on right. That took some time but we did it. Then you repeat everything you did to take it off to put it back together.

The washer is working fine now.

Can't get top off kenmore washer model # 110 22852 100

No problem. What you want to do is this, remove the screws from the back panel first to remove that metal plate protecting the wires. Once off you need to take off the two covers on the sides of the control panel. There is one on each side, just pop them off. Once off you will see there is a screw under there holding the control panel in place. Remove the screws and that will lean back. Next take a flat head screw driver and put it under the lip of the lid on the front of the washer. I mean the lip that is about an inch down from the top on the front. Pry up and the whole lid will pop up. You will see the lid switch there held in by a screw, follow the wire to where it plugs in and unplug it and replace with the new one. Let me know if you have any other questions and if this was helpful to you. Always happy to help and good luck.

depends some modles have 2 clips under the front left and right you stick your putty knife in there and pull the console up, also there could be end caps get a screw driver and pop them off then there will be 2 screws remove them. Then some models have 2 screws directly behing the consol remove them pull consol forward and up. Once you have got the consol situated there are 2 copper brakets push down and out with your screw driver this will release the cabinet soyou can replace the lid switch

Replacing lid switch

someone, Im not finding that model number. Going by the first six digits Im assuming that this is a regular top loader and not an Oasis washer. If so, remove the end caps on the consol by pulling them off. Remove the screws under each end cap and flip the consol up. Unplug the lid switch connector and snap springs holding the cabinet on. The whole cabinet will pull forward and you can get at the lid switch. Check out the pics and post back...Catriver.
