My furnace will not ignite

If it has a glowing igniter, that must mean it is a Gas furnace?-- LP or Natural Gas?-- We need to establish a few things like:
1.) Is there a good supply of Gas?
2.). When the Igniter starts to glow, can you hear a gas valve click'?- and then is there a small flow of Pilot gas? (over the area where the burners will need to flow gas-- so the gas in the burner tubes can be ignited safely.)
3.) There is a circuit somewhere in there, that detects that you have established FLAME-- (Usually a 'flame rod' that allows the main gas valve to open.) Can you see the 'pilot flame' touching that rod? A very small electric current is actually conducted thru the flame, -- completing the circuit that allows the safety circuit to go to the next step, before it opens the main gas valve.)
These things have to exist, before the safety circuitry allows the main gas valve to open.
Tell us more, what you observe, as you try to start it again.

Pilot light won't light

Will it initially light, then go out when you release the button?
If yes, then change/adjust the thermocouple or pilot size.
If no, then check that you have a gas supply, that the igniter is sparking, that the gas valve is allowing the pilot flow through.

My home heating system consists of an ancient (but efficient and flawless) 1924 Richardson steam boiler. It was originally installed to burn coal, but in the 1930s a Honeywell Janitrol natural gas system...

Hi; I first want to know if You can use a millivolt generator operated pilot valve sized to fit Your gas supply line. Secondly does Your existing main gas valve supply the pilot gas. This is very important and I need to know before I can give You options...Lastly I have to tell You never tell a public help engine that You have removed any safety feature from a gas appliance. This is very dangerous for anyone in Your house. Now Im being very gentle on You because I want to help You solve this problem. 706-319-0055...alpharome416 eastern time...

Gas boiler doesnt ignite

Clean the pilot assembly and replace the thermocouple. I suspect that the thermocouple that is installed now is getting tired and is failing. While you do that, clean any debris off the burner(s) and look for any sensors that may need a cleaning as well. You could have a bad connection on the gas valve so check all wire connections for corrosion and clean. Yes the gas valve could be bad not allowing the main burner to ignite but check everything else first.

My dad has a valliant boiler VP4 ZE15 IT IS AROUND 3 YEARS OLD IT ISNOT IGNITING I HAVE TURNED PRESSURE UP AND HELD THE BUTTON IN FOR A MINUTE. i CANNOT FIND WHWERE THE RESET BUTTON IS TO TRY THIS PLEASE...

Turn the power off at the wall , wait 60 seconds and the boiler will automatically reset.

Modern boilers are complex re safety and the boiler will only start if the exhaust fan is running and is up to speed .

The vacuum caused by the fan trips a switch and allows ignition to continue

If the pilot light does not come on it does not warm up the thermocouple which turns on the main gas valve.

If you go to the Valliant website they will supply you with a user guide
