Did all the things you suggested and got the results that concludes that the mother board is defective. Not wanting that to be the case I tried to reinstall windows and got an error message telling me to install software for the hard drive. Tried using an external drive, same results. Am I just whistling in the wind ?

Looking at your motherboard info you only have an IDE controller it is possible that there is a problem with the IDE contoller.

However this is a old computer and it will not support over a 120gb hard drive on the IDE controller. So if you have a hard drive that is bigger than 120gb then you will need to purchase a controller card that will support the bigger drive.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions

You need to determine if this is a hardware or software problem. First find out if the units get power take out the cover of the desktop and check one of the big 4-wire connectors if it's powered with a voltmeter: black (-), red (+5 volts) and yellow (+12 volts).
If they are ok then boot into the BIOS and in there find out if the internal hard disk is detected ; if it isn't then check that the jumpers and the cables are attached accordingly : the hard disk on its own cable, at the top connector and the jumper set at master. If this is the case then the motherboard of your Dell has died - time for a new pc.
If the disk is correctly detected in the BIOS then the Windows install disk is defective and you need another one.

Yes, the southbridge - the chip on the motherboard that controls the external connections like IDE and USB - has died and it can't be replaced since it's soldered there.

Time for a new motherboard. But since your pc is a very old one and finding a new motherboard for it will be impossible (they're no longer made), time for a new pc.

Hardrive is unknown device in bios

The BIOS determines the maximum size hard disk the computer can support.
The max hard disk size for this model Dell is 80Gb.
To use your 250Gb hard drive, install this Hard drive into an USB hard drive case and use it as an external USB hard drive.

My d610 does not recognize my cd drive

Is the USB-compatible drive recognized when connected to some other computer? If OK, then the drive is OK.

Is _ANY_ USB device (memory-stick, camera, mouse, keyboard, printer) recognized when connected to any of the USB ports on your computer?
If not, then the USB device-drivers for Windows have not been loaded.

Drastic: backup all your data files, bookmarks, and music, to an external hard-drive, and reinstall Windows from the Dell-provided "System Restore" set of CD-ROMs.

Dell 2400 wont recognize harddrive

I don't know how old the Dell is but I have not seen a BIOS setup routine that did not automatically find and recognize a new hard drive for many years. Perhaps the BIOS is the source of the problem.  Did you try the removed drive in another system? Did you check the CMOS backup battery? If this needs to be replaced, it may not recognize much of anything.

Computer doesn't recognize the external drive

I asume the connection is via an USB?
Try another usb-port and see if that helps, if not try to connect the disc on another PC (maybe a friends pc) and see is that pc recognize the disc.

Good luck!
