Obviously, the motor shaft is either broken or loose. Sounds like poor quality to me. Complain to the manufacturer- this item should last for years, literally. Here's their web site:
You might take it apart to see if you can tighten, glue, or fix it.
Good luck, hope this helps, and thanks for using FixYa.

Ours just did the same thing, only it's 5 years old. What do you do if you don't know how to take the motor shaft apart? The lights still work.

I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan Model BC552. light works, but fan does not. there is vibration (hum) when fan motor is switched on, but fan blades do not move. Blades rotate freely.

Start up capacitor is likely bad. That's the rectangle thing in the bonnet with two wires. If you replace it, replace the on/off switch at three same time.

Hello, I replaced a light fixture on my existing Emerson ceiling fan. The light worked right away but the blades didn't turn. I could hear power going to the motor so I went back into the switch cup and...

Signs of a bad capacitor in a ceiling fan include:

  • Fan runs slowly or not at all on all speeds
  • Fan will not start but will spin if started by hand
  • Certain speeds are slow or do not work
  • The motor hums and turns freely by hand but will not spin

The capacitor is usually a black box inside the switch housing of the fan. If this box appears burnt or melted in any way, that is also the sign of a bad capacitor and it should be replaced.

Daughter was shaking out her bed sheet when it hit the ceiling fan and all the lights went out, looks shorted. Do I need to buy a new light unit?

no, you don't need to buy another unit as long as your ceiling fan motor still in good condition. most probably the cause of the blackout is the overload of the fan motor when the fan blades entangled with the sheets and it trips the breaker due to over current.

if your fan still runs by now then it is ok. to be sure, have it checked for a qualified person.

If the fan blade mounts are removable, go to your local hardware store with one of the mounts, and find some screws that will fit. You might not be able to get the same color, but if you check a few stores you should find something with the right shape of head to fit snugly.

It sounds like the fan motor has blown out. Is this an old fan? The motors do burn out every 5-10 years, depending on the brand and quality of motor.

There's a rubber circle that is the damper between the blades and the motor shaft that rotates. The circle has spokes connecting the outer ring, which the blades screw into, to the inner ring which attaches to the shaft and holds it. If the spokes break you get the symptoms you describe, motor hums but no rotation, but blades can turn manually if you hand turn them them. If this is the case you need to remove and replace the blade mounting ring/damper. (About 25 bucks online)
