Probably bearing failure.. usually caused by overheating.. Has the lint filter been cleaned on a regular basis? If it is the bearings, it's quite a major job to fix. You might be able to prove this by attempting to move the inner drum by hand.. Eg see if there is any play or movement up & down in the actual drum or inner lining, where you put the clothes. Anyway, unless there is something metalic or hard trapped in the drum somewhere, it's most likely to be bearings.Rgds,

Sounds like somethings stuck inside the drum, between outer wall of drum and cabinet...please inspect for loose items..

In all likelihood, the belt that runs the tumbler is loose, causing the tumbler to rotate off center. While it takes a few minutes, the front of the dryer should be removable and you can take the tumbler out and replace the belt.

My older Maytag dryer is making the classic rumbling noise when running. Heat seems fine. I can turn the tumbler by hand and sound like one of the tumbler wheels is vibraiting or wobbeling. what else...

Replace all drum wheels. I would replace the idler pulley and belt if the belt looks worn. Check front and rear felts for excessive wear. Check the blower wheel. Here is a link that should help

Loud noise as the tumbler is drying

Front or rear? Rear is probably center bearing. Fornt is front tub wheel or glide worn out. If noise is in front remove front and inspect.
