Question about Sony BRAVIA KDL-40S2000 40 in. LCD HDTV

1 Answer

Cannot get out sony bravia tv out of wide screen. When in setting under Wide Mode option for 'normal' screen is not available. The setting is better on HD channels however is still cut off on both sides. On regular channels it is distored side to side, top to bottom, and resolution is not clear

I have attempted to change all settings through the settings menu. Under the screen setting there is the category wide mode. It has the option for 'normal' however it will not allow me to choose this as an option. At this point I believe that is the option that I need/want. Also I have tried to 'reset' to the factory settings and this did not work either. When you respond please give further detail as to how I should fix the problem.

Printed off and attempted to follow directions on page 25 in the manual. The problem is that the manual screen menu and the menu on my tv are different especially with one big difference and that is that it does not have the auto format as an option on the menu. The menu that comes up on my tv (yes I am using my remote) is

    Screen: *Wide Mode

    *Game Pic

    *4:3 Default

    *Display ARea

    *Vertical Center

    *Vertical Size

The manual has the following categories that mine does not: Target Inputs, Screen Format, Auto Format, and Horizontal Shift.

I appreciate your help but it appears I need further assistance.

I have gone to the display area several times and just checked it again. My options are normal, -1, and -2. It is currently set at normal however whenever I have changed it to the others it doesn't really make that significant of a difference and definately does not fix my problem.

  • ctherme Sep 02, 2010

Sorry I missed your response. So my Wide Mode is set at Full, 4:3 Default is set -Off, and my display area is set at normal. However I have tried changing all of these several times and nothing has fixed the problem. Thank you for your continued help.

adjusting the zoom did nothing as well. As I stated before we have adjusted and tried everything that we can see on the menu screen. It does change slightly (enough for us to see), but does not fix the problem.

  • ctherme Sep 03, 2010

I am so sorry I did not receive an alert that you had responded yet again... thought you had given up on me! So tried that and...nothing...sorry! Went through pages 14 and 25 trying everything and got nothing changed. It is kind of frustrating that the manual screen menu and our tv screen menu are so different because I am sure that you were orginally correct in your thinking that it is in an automatic screen setting....just can't see how to get out of it!

  • ctherme Sep 03, 2010

I don't know if any of this is helpful but thought I would try... This tv has the 'wega style' idea what that mean/does, but to get into the settings we have to first use that button and none of the directions in the manual mentioned this.

Also I think that I mentioned the HD part of this in my orginal question, but thought i would clarifiy that we are hooked up to a cable box that has both regular, HD channels, and is a dvr. Probably doesn't matter but thought I would try to give you as much info as I can.

  • ctherme Sep 03, 2010

ok tried changing the 4:3 to 16:9 and no improvement. Tried changing it then making changes to the different modes and display and once again no improvment. I am so sorry that this is such a pain. It is driving me crazy!!

You have probably enabled Auto-format- meaning the tv will automatically choose the best(worst) format. Disable it from the screen menu so that you can change the screen size using the zoom button.

Let me be a bit more clear this time. Your tv has two types of format settings. One is manual and the other is auto. When its in manual format mode you can choose the resolution. When its in auto-format mode all options such as wide, normal, 4:3 etc., are disabled as the tv will automatically choose the screen size that is best for you. To be able to change them you should change the format setting to manual again. Please refer to page 25 of the manual at the link below.

-What about the display area option? The manual says you can set it to hide the 1" or 2" of the picture on either side. This may be what you did?

Ok.. Change the 4:3 to 16:9 and see if that improves the pic. Also try changing through different modes and see if any of them solve the problem. Otherwise we will just see if there is a factory reset option available. If that option is not there we will just do a firmware upgrade. Sorry for taking so long to solve your problem , but it has got me stumped too. So I think its probably a firmware bug.

How do I change to 4:3 aspect setting on sony kdl40ex500

If the WIDE button on the remote control isn't changing the aspect ratios here is what I can tell you:

Normal is not available when you are watching a 720p, 1080i or 1080p source.
If 4:3 Default is set to anything but Off, the Wide Mode setting changes only for the current channel. When you change channels (or inputs), Wide Mode is automatically replaced with the 4:3 Default setting for 4:3 sources. To retain the current Wide Mode setting as channels and inputs are changed, set 4:3 Default to Off.
4:3 Default is not available if Auto Wide is set to Off.

The owner's manual can be found here:

If you still can't get the aspect ratio to properly work you may need to do a power reset or perform a factory reset:,66/p/61659,62766,63066/ Just make sure to note any special picture or sound settings you may have made.

Sony bravia picture to large for screen

Sir press the screen mode button in your remote below input select button, press the screen mode button repeatedly to select smart, 4:3, wide, zoom, or 14:9.
  • Smart- Display conventional 4:3 broadcast with an imitation wide screen effect. The 4:3 picture is stretched to fill the screen.
  • 4:3- Display conventional 4:3 broadcast non-wide screen TV in the correct proportions.
  • Wide- Display wide screen 16:9 broadcast in the correct proportions.
  • Zoom- Display cinemascopic letter box format broadcasts in the correct proportions.
  • 14:9- Display 14:9 broadcasts in the correct proportions. As a result, black border areas are visible on the screen.

The picture on my sony bravia 52 in is huge and I cant seem to be able to fix it. On the picture size it is set at wide mode and normal is not highlighted to be able to change it

Try pressing HOME, Then go to SETTINGS From the list, select SCREEN
There are now several options that may be causing the picture to zoom. Try adjusting each setting in the following order, checking if the problem has solved after each change.
If you are still having problems, you may need to speak to Sony about having the TV serviced as an internal circuit may be broken - if this is the case it may be covered by the warranty.
I hope this helps - if you require more info, here is a link to the Manual for your tv

I have a 52 inch SONY Bravia that has been stuck in zoom mode since last night. iI am unable to see the writing and/or tops of heads on top of screen. any help available?

Press the "WIDE" button on the TV remote a few times to change the TV wide mode settings until you get it to "FULL". If that does not fix it, look on your Cable box remote for an "Aspect" or "Format" button and press it a few times. I hope this helps.

Wide screen mode won't go back to "normal".

Was exactly what you said. The cable box settings were in wide mode. Couldn't figure it out at all. Funny thing was too.. on my cable box remote, the button under the #9 button is the # button.. it doesn't say zoom at all.. but it totally controls the zoom.

So thanks for that.. AND thanks for saying "under the #9 on the cable remote" instead of just saying .. the zoom button.

Thanks again!!!

This is actually due to the signal format being sent down from the transmitters/broadcaster. They by defauly output 4:3 which your tuner in your TV interprets and rejigs it into 16:9. Te adverts as they come on are seen by the tuner in your tv as a change in aspect ratio, and therefore your TV is trying to best display these. However, if you go to your screen settings, you can change the screen auto format to your choice and this chould ensure that the picture always gets set to your choice. If set on default, it will vary between 'wide' and 'smart'.

Image on 'normal' setting isn't using full height of tv screen.

What you will need to do is grab your remote that came with the tv - click "Menu">select "Settings">go down to "Screen" and make sure that:

1. Wide Mode reads "Full"
2. Auto Wide reads "On"
3. Display Area reads "Full Pixel"

Hope that helps.

Normal Picture Mode Not Available With Cox HD-DVR (Motorola DCH3416) and HDMI Cable

With an HDMI cable connected, the cable box determines the picture size. The settings on the cable box must be changed in order for you to get the correct picture size. I have some experience with Motorola cable boxes; usually to access the settings you turn the box OFF and then press the menu or settings button on the box to bring up the display menu. Hope this helps!
