Question about Samsung SH-S182 DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner
I have Samsung make TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182F writer since last year. I am facing the following problems since last week
1. Whenever I try to burn a CD/DVD +R, I get a message that there is no space in the CD/DVD or it is nor RW.
2. I have found that even when there is suffcient empty space, the above message is displayed for +R CD and in the properties the free space dispalyed is 0 bytes and the disk size is shown as the sum of the exisiting files in the CD.
3. When trying burning new files on a RW CD, I have found that once a file / few files are burnt on it in a single session, next time it tells that there is no empty space and it erases all the files and writes the new file/s.
4. I understand that once a CD is burnt, it gets write protected. Hence for a RW CD it erases the previous files and writes new ones.
5. I reloaded thw NERO, but the same problem exists.
Please help
1. Whenever I try to burn a CD/DVD +R, I get a message that there is no space in the CD/DVD or it is nor RW.
No matter what, if you do not have the correct drivers, it will always show 0 bytes free of size capacity.
Nero has it's own driver, so you usually will be able to use it with all formats of writable discs.
Also gives you an answer to this.
2. I
have found that even when there is suffcient empty space, the above
message is displayed for +R CD and in the properties the free space
dispalyed is 0 bytes and the disk size is shown as the sum of the
exisiting files in the CD.
3. When trying burning new files on a RW CD, I have found that once a file / few files are burnt on it in a single session, next time it tells that there is no empty space and it erases all the files and writes the new file/s.
So far, the only way I know of keeping an opened session, and not loosing the first session, is the drivers found on newer (Windows Vista and Windows 7.)
As long as you have the correct drivers for the DVD +-R RW drive, it'll keep opened session, till there's just enough space left to finalize the disc.
4. I
understand that once a CD is burnt, it gets write protected. Hence for a
RW CD it erases the previous files and writes new ones.
The proper term is (DAO) Disc At Once.
To me, most of your problems sounds like software and (Driver) issues. I have a TSSTcorp drive, and other then not being able to keep opened session, and I know why.. (WinXP X64) is that reason.
It's a software matter.
If I were you, I'd search for software updates.
If this fails, then next, try to get in touch with Samsung.
If all else fails, then try a Firmware update.
Nero is only as good as what ever drivers it has... if those drivers are not compatible with your hardware, you could install it 100 times,, it aint gonna help you man!!
Does any of that help?

I have been informed by NERO that I should first insert the CD/DVD and then click on Make a Data Disk. This I have been following religously and the problem has overcome. But Still with each burning the size as well as the free space in the disk gets reduced substantially

Hi,
on creation or compilation of any cd/dvd regardless of disk format or capacity. the finalizing of a disk. will write a TOC ( table Of Contents ) this will inform the drive reading the disk. whats on it. even if a cd or dvd writes 1 track of music. if thats all you put on the disk, and finalise it. that will be the finished capacity. if you use rw disks. you must format the disk before re-using it.
this will completely erase all previous data on it.
If as stated you are using Nero. there are setting options, to create a multi-session cd/dvd whereby you can add additional files at a later date. however this disk will not be readable, by any other computer-cd/dvd player. until the disk has been finalised, and produced the Table-Of-Contents. That means that this is a property rather than a problem. Thank you very much quite logical and reasonable answer.
