Re: garmin gps 296
If it does not show 'charging' when connected to power, then something may be wrong with the power cord. If it is the vehicle cord (the one with the cigarette lighter plug) check the fuse in the tip of the cord.

If this happens even when the unit is plugged into the power source (lighter) then you should replace the battery. You can search online for battery replacements and instructions. Then plug into your PC for garmin updates. Updates are important for Garmins.
It sounds like the battery is the issue. Try leaving it plugged in over night. If that does not help, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This will reset the device, and hopefully restore functionality. Consult the user guide for more info.
http://www.newpower99.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=GARMIN+NUVI+260&Show=ExtInfo&gclid=CLzv0pac46ECFQQTawodklsxIg. This place has the battery and tools come with it!. its super easy and way cheaper than buying a new garmin. 2 screws and unplug the old battery and plug in the new. I did mine and I never messed with the internals before.
If you have tried the master reset to no avail I recommend that you send your GPS in for repair. Once you open it yourself, the warranty is null and void. If it is under one year old, it is under a full warranty. If it is over a year old, Garmin will repair it for a flat rate of $296. You will have to decide whether repair or replace is the best option for you. That said, here is the link to their repair site http://www8.garmin.com/support/outofwarranty.html
I had the problem where I ended up disassembling the Garmin and adding a small piece of plastic to the on/off button. For some reason the push button on the top does not reach the one on the circuit board.
