Question about Meade Optics

1 Answer

I have an older Meade LX200 GPS with autostar II handset. The telescope was working fine and last night I got an error message on the handset "Error: Inv. Heap" and the telescope locks up with no further handset or RS232 communications working. I powered the telescope down. When the telescope powered back on, I got the welcome to Autostar message and the firmware version 4.2g. It then changes to a message "Reorganizing" and then generates the Error: Inv. Heap". Meade says to "Reset" but the system locksup before getting to that point in the bootup. Any input on how to resolve this problem?

I worked through the Meade handset reset procedure , "999", at startup with my version handset that allows firmware routine uploading. This firmware upload completed successfully but I get the same results when the telescope is rebooted. I also tried replacing the handset cable but get the same error on rebooting. It sounds like it is not a handset problem? I am working to try to contact some of the Meade telescope's main ciruit board experts to validate that it is on that board before sending it out for repair. Thanks, for your help with this problem.

You may have Corrupted firmware in the hand controller- that's why they want you to do a RESET.

You might have to reload the correct firmware to fix this problem.

I believe if you hold down the ENTER KEY and the SCROLL DOWN arrow key and then turn on the scope you enter SAFE LOAD where you can reload the firmware.

Hello my name is greg i have a lx200-acf from my dad when he passed away do not no howto use it ?

This is a great scope. I have a much smaller version :)
1. Take it out on some dark night. 2. Let it auto-align 3. Select something to look at using the AutoStar II 4. Press Go.
Gander at the wonders of the universe.
In the AutoStar, there is a program called Sky Tour. This will pick some things out for you.
Start with a "wide" eyepiece - to see more of the sky. Work your way to high powers as you need or as sky conditions permit.
Goto a few local "star parties".

I have a broken autostar 2 telescope controller and need a replacement but can not find one in the UK

Many Meade dealers can order you a new hand controller, either Autostar II, or the 497 controller. Contact a large telescope dealer in the UK, or you can order direct from Meade here:

8" Meade LX200 GPS: When I turn on the telescope the Autostar's red light come on but nothing else. After a few seconds I can use the direction motors with the hand controller only.

The first thing I would do is get another new hand controller cable. These can be ordered from Meade, or from a local dealer, or from www.scopestuff.com.

If a new cable does not help-- I would locate another Hand controller just to test if the controller has gone bad.

You can also try reinstalling the firmware into the hand controller, using the Meade version 5.9 updater software. You will need the proper computer cable between the computer and the hand controller to update the firmware.

Meade LX200GPS 16" out of calibration?

Before you panic I would update the firmware/software on the telescope. With an LX200 interface cable you can upgrade the software in your telescope from your PC by going to Meade's web site at www.meade.com

Download Meade's ASU (Autostar Update Utility) and the latest software for your Autostar II absolutely free. You can also use the ASU to add Comets, Asteroids, Satellites, and User Objects to your Autostar II with a few simple clicks of the mouse.

I believe you can get the manual here.

Problem with start up on telescope

Most probably, flat batteries. Autostars go berserk when batteries are even a little low. Try it with a mains power adaptor instead.

Otherwise, maybe its a dodgy curly cable, broken Autostar, broken control panel or Autostar firmware needs reloaded

LX200 GPS problem

I would suspect the Autostar II controller - the symptom seems like a 'stuck' key that tells the telescope to slew in one direction. The controller can be opened with no problems - just be sure not to lose and parts by doing it inside. The keys are molded rubber that press to the curcuit board to make contact. Clean carefully with a dry lint-free cloth and re-assemble. Note: the red filter on the top end falls out when the case is opened, so make sure it is in place when closing. When testing, make sure the axis clamps are loose so the gears can free-wheel without causing damage. Also - do not leave batteries in the telescope in not being used - the last thing you need is a leak.

Computer control and pointing with NorthStar Goto & Autostar

Your reseller is correct. The wire (Meade cable #505) goes from an RS232 serial port on PC to a 4pin RJ plug. This plugs into the 2nd socket on the bottom of an Autostar 497 handset, the other socket being used for the curly lead to the telescope. So it goes PC to Autostar to telescope.

A common error is to try plugging the serial wire into an "AUX" ort on the telescope control panel - same connector. Not only does this not work, it can cause a lot of damage.

Wired like this you can control the scope from Meade's Autostar Suite (or many other planetarium softwares). You can also update the Autostar software to the latest 2009 version.

What else can go wrong? Well, many people want to control from a laptop, and modern ones don't have RS232 serial ports. Then you need a USB-to-serial convertor dongle, which effectively add a serial port to a laptop. But they often give it a very high port number (eg COM17) that the planetarium software does not find. Use Control Panel to reset the USB-serial-port to COM 1, 2, 3 or 4 and all should be well. But it can be a right fiddle!
