These alternators need a slightly magetized armature in order to start. If you accidentally put AC into where it is supposed to come out, you would erase the magnetic field in the armature. You have to get to the excitor winding where you will find a bridged rectifier and apply voltage in that polarity to bring back the residual magnetism. Or if you feel lucky, you can just apply 12v from a battery into the outlet for a second with the engine off. It will magetize the armature, but might be backwards. Shut off engine and try your luck again. Maybe reverse polarity of the battery, and start engine again and check it. Keep trying, till it comes on when you start it. If this never works, you could have a problem with worn brushes.

It could be a bad braker or a bad capacitor. Make sure the capacitor is not swelled up out of shape. The capacitor might be in the control box with the braker or you have to remove the rear cover of the generator to find it.

If I understand the problem correctly, it runs fine after you cleaned the carb, but the auto idle will not engage when you put a load on it. First if it has a switch to turn the auto idle off try that. if it does not rev up, then the magnetic controller is stuck. There is a magnetic coil which is connected to the throttle and this either pulls or releases the throttle when load is applied. My guess is that this is hung up a bit. Look for a small round coil with wires coming off it that is connected to the throttle assembly. You could also try tracing the wire from the auto idle switch backwards. This may just be stuck in the idle position by corrosion. especially if you live in a humid area or one near the ocean. gently try to work it a bit by hand (when the generator is not running) and try a bit of wd40 or the like.

check all the electrical connections for corrosion. The older millivolt heater run on less than one volt and it's critical that all connections are making good contact. Clean as many of them as you can. You can also try replacing the pilot generator/assy as they lose power over time. Test to make sure output is more than 500mv.

My kohler generator was running with out a flaw.

Double check your grounds at both the frame and the battery. Otherwise, your starter probably has a shorted field.
