I have an older Video 8 Sony Handycam that has not used for awhile and when I went to try it out before selling it the tape keeps popping out and it sounds like it wants to work but doesn't.

Most likely the capacitors on the PCBs have started to leak. This will happen when a camcorder sits unused for awhile. A good test of this is to power the unit on, let it heat up for about 20 or 30 minutes, then open where the tape goes and smell it. If it smells like fish, your caps are leaking. (Capacitors contain fish oil) If this is the case, unfortunately it is not cost effective to repair. Also, another sign of leaky caps is if the image in your viewfinder or LCD is rolling, smeared, or distorted. Hope this was helpful to you. www.austintelstarservices.com

Try these steps:

1. Open the tape cover fully until it clicks open.
2. Turn the camcorder on to "VCR Mode."
3. With the cover still open and the camera in "VCR mode," take out the battery.
4. Put the battery back in--out should pop your tape.

Keep us updated.

My sony Handycam video 8 ccd-trv40 will no longer record any sound. The camera will play back older tapes and their audio and video. Any suggestions?

This is usually caused by an oxidized or defective Audio/Video drum. Try running a cleaning tape through the camera. If this does not solve the problem the camera will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

HAVE CCD-TRV22 , WHAT VIDEO TAPE NUMBER DO I

Though 8mm filming was and still is the best safest way to make movies Sony have stopped producing 8mm tapes, I use the brand new Digital 8 tapes on my brand new Sony camera, would never dream of going over to Hard drive/SD card/DVD recording cameras as the image will not last as long as it will on 8mm tape.
Also the 8mm cameras are much better made than anything since 2006.
If you type 8mm movie tapes in your search engine you will find 100's of firms still selling your tapes, they will help you choose the right one ok?

Sony handycam video cassette

To the best of my knowledge 8mm VTR's have not been available for some time now. On the other hand there are plenty of Hi8 cameras and players available after market. eBay is a great source. Keep in mind that Hi8 cameras and decks will also play standard 8mm video tapes.
There are also many video tape transfer services that will transfer your 8mm tapes to DVD or other formats of your choice. Just Google "videotape transfer service"

Tapes sounding funny

try using a smaller tapetime, the grinding noise your hearing is the gears of the tape take up within the casette not the camera, it seems the Sony tapes are 120mins long and the Sony tapes are heavier than TDK and your spool take up on the camera can't take it. the TDK tapes you were previously using may have been a shorter time than 120minute?...try any Hi 8 60min tapes instead. not the 120, they can be too heavy for the take up spool motor of the camera and all its doing is stretching and winding the cassette tape and unable to pull it with a 120 min cassette

Viewing SONY 8mm Tapes -- Please help

The older tapes were shot on a 8mm camcorder and the camcorder you have wil not play them becasue it doesn't have backwards compatability with the older format. The tapes you recorded are on a digital 8 camcorderr and it is different encoding than the one you recorded the other 60 tapes with. You will need to find either a dcr-trv 350 trv 530 trv 730 ect as these have the ability to play all the tapes.
Or find an older 8mm camcorder to play your tapes with.
Hope this helps
Cheers

Take the battery out and turn selection switch to camera and then turn it off. Put the battery back in and its working again.
if that doesn't work try
Try smacking the side of the camera relatively hard with the palm of your hand. Eject the tape and reinsert. You may need to do this a couple of times.
