Question about Apple iBook G3 Mac Notebook

1 Answer

G3 Doesn't power up

Yesterday I received a cheap second hand G3 from someone on ebay who sold it as untested. It powered up fine although switched off quickly when the battery ran out. When I put the machine on charge it worked fine (although with a patchy screen).

I switched it off and left it to charge over night. When I came back to it this morning the DC lead was still amber although when you press the button on the battery all four lights illuinate. The computer doesn't power up at all, either under battery or mains power.

I can't work out what's changed over night. I have my girlfriends work computer which is identical so I can try swapping parts to work out what's wrong.

Has anyone come across this before?

Hi,
I,d check that the laptop isn,t in Standby or powersave Mode.
Check the Ram, and re-seat if necessary.
Try the laptop without The Battery.

How do you reset power management on the ibook g3

For most situations, a restart is sufficient. If the computer has stopped responding, try these steps, in order, until the computer responds:
  1. Force Quit (Option-Command-Escape)
  2. Restart (Control-Command-Power)
  3. Force Shut Down (press the power button for 10 seconds)
Only perform a PMU reset on the computer if none of the above steps resolved the situation.

It's probably your logic board. One thing you can try that may help you out is to take out the battery (if you can) and press and hold the power button for 10 seconds. If it's a capacitor problem on the board that should discharge it. If that doesn't work then you should probably try to turn on the computer while holding CMD + Option + P + R to reset the PRAM. If that doesn't work then you're probably going to have to seek professional help.

Have a late 2007 macbook pro and it doesn't turn on..tried the pram smc and it still doesn't turn on is there any other way to fix the problem>?

Unplug the power cable; remove the battery then hold down the power button for 30 seconds. Reinstall the battery; plug the power back in and hold down the power button for 30 to 60 seconds and see if it starts.

Describe your cannot start ibook G3Problem it simply does not start, battery is ok and I have tried to take the battery away and back in its place, but nothing what can I do?

Make sure your iBook is plugged in to the wall. Hold down the power button for a few seconds. If that doesn't work, try holding down Command (the Apple key)-Option-P-R (hold all four keys down) and press the power button. Be sure to hold the power button for a few seconds whenever you turn it on.

If that doesn't work, try resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU). This is kind of a "last resort," according to Apple. Don't do this all the time.
  1. Reset the power manager by simultaneously pressing and then releasing Shift-Control-Option-Power on the keyboard. Do not press the fn (Function) key while using this combination of keystrokes.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
If you have a very old iBook, you may have to unplug your iBook, remove the battery, and
  1. Press and release the reset button located above the Audio/Video port on the left side of the iBook (Dual USB) computer by inserting the end of a paper clip into the small hole and gently pressing the switch once.
  2. Wait 5 seconds.
  3. Reconnect the AC power adapter.
  4. Put the battery back in the computer.
  5. Press the Power button to restart the iBook computer.
(If it still doesn't start, do you hear the fans going?)

Good luck! Let us know if these steps solve your issue.

It may not be a fan, it may be the cd drive spinning up. Is there a cd in it?

Powerbook g3 will only power up for a few seconds then shut off, charger was bought on ebay as well as the computer, computer has no hard drive and only 32m of memory

Hi Alienlogic,

As noted in my other response to your other posting, more information is useful.

The computer isn't going to boot-up normally with no hard drive.

You might try target booting if you happen to have another bootable drive you can connect with (like a FireWire drive with the OS installed, or if you're trying to boot from an install CD, or Netbooting to a server).

Having only 32Mb RAM doesn't help, but in this case, your computer really has nothing to boot-up. Get yourself a hard drive you can use, or one of the options I mentioned above.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance,

Jon

Powerbook g3 will power up for 4 sec. then shut off

Hi Alienlogic,

Several points here:
1) More info as to make/model, and type of powercord would have been helpful.

2) From your description above, it sounds like you have a faulty connection in the laptop's DC/Sound card (the small circuit board that the power cord plugs in to). You can sometimes get a temporary workaround by rigging a way to apply gentle pressure on the plug to keep it connected, say with a rubber band or the like, but the only real fix is to have the board fixed or replaced. Sooner or later, the workaround - won't any more.

3) With most iBooks and Powerbooks I've worked on, this involves nearly complete dis-assembly of the computer, and you have to find a working part, or be handy enough with a soldering gun and lucky enough to have a break that you can fix yourself.

4) Parts are for-sale on eBay, or from other parts resellers on the web.

If I can be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it accordingly.

Thanks in-advance,

Jon

We have an older ibook **** shell computer which freezes in start up.we do not own a recovery cd or a operating system cd. any clue what to do or purchase to fix it?

I would first try to reboot the PRAM.
The Perameter ram stores data for your start up and something there might be the culperate.
TO do this hold down the shift and "P" and "R" keys as you hard boot it by holding down the power button for 10 seconds. Release the power button and hold those above keys (shift, P, R ) down until you hear four chimes. Then let them go. It should boot fine then. If it still freezes, write me back.

IBook G3 900mhz 14" lcd power failure

One more thing to try is a little know power management kuda switch on some macs. On some Ibooks if the keyboard lifts off look for a little red or green button. If you can find it remove the battery and all power let sit for 20 minutes then press that button for about 15 seconds. That puts the power management processor back to factory settings. If it doesn't have the kuda switch remove all power like before and hold down the start button for the same time. My guess is it isn't the main cpu or it wouldn't boot, it will shut down if it gets to hot though. Make sure your fan is working to eliminate it being that.
