Sony vaio pcg-7m1L will not boot. Windows XP-Home. will not go into BIOS !!! or at least appears not to, cuz the hard drive light stays lite for about 2 minutes before going out. monitor will not light. external monitor will not light even toggling the Fn keys. there is a very brief hum when the hard drive starts or tries to start. then i can hear the arm on the hard drive move and a few clicks then nothing from the hard drive even through hard drive light is lite. these are very quite sounds, I have to have my ear against the case to here them. no beeps. then i tried an Unbuntu 9.1 Boot/installation disk in the DVD-Drive will not boot either. Also sometimes it will not turn on or off when u push the power button. the DVD drive makes all the normal sounds at the right time, as if it is actually booting from the disk then nothing. It turns of the drive and no change. no sounds, hard drive light out, dvd drive light out. Alpha-Lock light, Num-Lock light, and other 3rd Lock light on the right, are all on solid and will not toggle with the keys. wifi light turns on and off with its switch. Ethernet lights lite. . I'm thinking it is: 1) an under-volt or under-current from the Power Supply. 2) maybe frayed wires in the power cord reducing current. 3) maybe a crack in the mother board. 4) maybe someone spilled liquid in the computer and never told me. . Help! i took a Dell Inspiron apart one time. getting it back together right was a nightmare, even when i have parts labled and in a dozen ziplock bags it was a freaken nightnare. Please tell me this will be easier.

SOURCE: computer wont boot

Try disambling the system. Clean it with a wind blower. Check BIOS battery capacity. Replace if possible. Power on the laptop. Do you hear humming sound from hard disk ? If you hear sssssssshhhhh sound from hard disk; it's OK. Replace RAM with new one. If problem still exists Than change main board. Hope that not happen. Keep informing.

Try reseating the Memory Modules. Try each module one at a time, see if the problem is Isolated to one module or the other. They may just need to be re-seated to ensure proper contact

SOURCE: Compaq Presario V2000 will not boot.

Remove the battery and just leave it off the computer, then plug in the power cord and try it. If it works with no battery...the battery is completely dead and you need to replace.

go to Control Panel and select system. A box with system properties pops up and then select the hardware tab. Now click the device manager, and a huge list is shown...right click on the items you need drivers for. This will bring up the option to "update driver".
hope it helps

If you are trying to install Windows XP then -
The problem is that XP installation CD does not have a SATA driver, unless you have a SATA drive on a disk etc. and can install the driver when XP asks for a hard drive driver then, XP cannot detect the hard disk and therefore won't install XP. The FIX. Go into the BIOS and disable the SATA drive (enable IDE emulation), this will make XP think it is a IDE/PATA hard disk. Then you can install XP normally. When Windows has been installed then install all the device drivers (including the SATA driver), then shut down and boot up and got into the BIOS and enable the SATA drive.

Hello sir, Hi, unless we find a replacement cd drive for your laptop. I don't see how this goes. you see, the laptop you have does not support boot from USB drives, (see setup on the bios first boot, hopefully theres a usb boot option, if not you may opt for a WINME install.) so its useless to use the internal CD rom drive.

Hello. I have Sony Vaio PCG-5426. And I can't reinstall windows on that machine. I have out CD-ROM "II FreeCom" and i try to reinstall with that. In BIOS menu I acces for first boot drive...

you shouldn't need to have to press f9 to boot from cd rom if you have it set in the bios as the first boot device , are you sure the copy of windows on cd that you have is bootable. Try booting from the disc on another laptop or pc and see if you can start it

Another option to try is to boot from a usb drive

instructions on how to do that are here

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=118576

once you have booted to usb you should be able to access the cd rom

depending on what version of windows you are trying to install you will need to run different programs.

you could also install vista or windows 7 to usb drive and install it from that, it is much quicker than installing from cd/dvd you would need to be able to boot from usb to start with though

how to install vista or windows 7 from usb instructions can be found here

Sony VAIO PCG-28l appears to boot up and makes the Windows opening sound but monitor stays completely blank.

Monitor could be blown - no picture or your hard drive might be fried. At boot up look continually tap the F8 key until you get to the "Safe Mode" screen. Choose to boot into safe mode and see if that works. If it doesn't - its either the monitor or the hard drive.

There are some other recovery options depending on which version of windows you are using.

Good day,

You have to set the CD as the first boot device in the BIOS.
When you power on the laptop press delete repeatedly until you are in the BIOS.
You then have to browse trough the tabs until you find Boot Priority.
On the first Priority set the CD-ROM and on the second Priority set your hard drive.
Save the settings and exit.

The machine will reboot and will ask you to press any button to boot from disk.
Press any button to launch the installer and you are on your way to install Windows.

Good luck!
Let me know if this solution was useful!

How Do I Boot A Sony VAIO PCG-Z505LS model # PCG-531A?

The BIOS one can usually be eliminated  by disconnecting the battery and shorting the terminals, if necessary, then plugging the battery back in.    The administrator pass work can sometimes be gotten around by pressing the F8 while loading, then changing it.   The most undesirable option is to reformat and buy another OS.   Sorry for the hard time.
