There is typically a reset button on the back or bottom of these modems. It is very small and will need to be pressed with a paper clip or some thing of that size. Doing this should reset the modem back to the manufacturing defaults.

i have tried that a few times and it still won't get rid of the security enabled password. Which makes it so I can't get online and get to the configuration for the modem.

The wireless connection is not working. The only network that shows up is lynksis wich has a waek connection and asks for a password that i have neever had to use before, so i dont know what the password...

Unfortunately the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard is not a wireless device. The Linksys you are trying to connect to is most likely someone in your area and they have it password protected, which is why it is asking for a password.

In order to setup Wireless you will need to invest in a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or some other Wireless Router. They can be found at any computer store.

Once you have the wireless router you can connect an Ethernet cable from the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard to the Wireless Router. From there follow the instructions for the Wireless Router you purchased to set it up and secure it.

If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thank You,
Brandon

Is a Belkin N+ wireless router compatable to a Motorola modem SB5100?

No - one it is a modem, the other is a router.
The modem 'translate' the data as it comes into your network.
Routers connect computer (direct traffic).

Need to get wireless on my laptop,

No, the SB5100 is just a cable modem, not a wireless router. You will need to keep your sb5100 but you will need to purchase a wireless router if you want wireless on your laptop. If you can also plug your laptop into the sb5100 via an ethernet cable for your internet connection. Linksys and Belkin and others make wireless routers that you can use for your wireless connections.

How do I set up a wireless connection to my laptop

This is pretty straight forward because the Netgear, provided it is a wireless model, has its wireless transmitter on by default.  So, you just need to login to the router (via any web browser--Firefox, IE, Safari, etc) and enter "192.168.1.1" (without the quotes) and hit return/enter.  In the user name enter "admin" and "password" for the password (unless it was set to something else by your dad when he first bought it).  In the Netgear router interface, select wireless and make sure that it is turned ON and it will say what the SSID is (you can change it if you like to any word or words without spaces).  The SSID is the name of the network that you choose to login with when you connect to the wireless.
Next, you need to purchase a Wireless PCI card.  If it is a PC then the choices are many, but this is economical and easy to install.  Just go here:  http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833315082
If he needs a wireless router as well, this one is economical and fast: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833180054

All in all, it will be about $60 for the set, much cheaper than the chain stores would charge and this is an N standard network NOT a G, so it is as fast as they come.
As for Macs, the same thing applies for the wireless routers and the Macs usually come with built in wireless cards.
Use the setup software that comes with the router to set things up and you should be all set.  Enable a WEP or WPA security password for the network if possible to keep out unwanted riff-raff. Sincerely, Jeff LazCom.com

Can't connect Motorola sb5100 to a Linksys wrt54g

Make sure that you have the ethernet cord from your modem plugged into the WAN/Internet port on your router. Then unplug the power cord from your cable modem and plug it right back in. After the modem fully comes back online, unplug the power cord on the wireless router and plug it back in. wait 30 - 60 sec and then try and connect.

Most cable companies only allow one active"CPE" at a time for internet access. All this means is when you change what is connected to the cable modem you must always reboot the cable modem to allow access.

Hope this helps. Let me know if it does not work.

Inability to connect to Internet

The easiest solution would be to use an ethernet connection. A second problem is probably on most cable modems you can either use a USB connection OR an ethernet connection you cannoot use both at the same time.
